This one is a true story. Happened to me at 'Zink' inside the Doubletree Denver Tech Center near KAPA.

My FO and I wander down to the bar after a day of flying. The bartender approaches me and asks what I'd like. I replied, "a Beam and Coke". She said, "sorry, we're out of Jim Beam". Okay, how about a Jack and Coke? Nope, out of Jack. What do you have on draft? Sorry, we're out of beer. All beer? Yeah, sorry.

Okay...what do you have? Well, we have Chardnay and Johnny Walker Black Label. Okay, ummmm, guess I'll drink Scotch tonight. I'll have the Johnny Walker on the rocks. Fine. The drink comes and my FO has the same. While giving us the drinks the bartender mentions she 'hooked us up' for all the trouble as she was embarrassed by the lack of stock and we obviously didn't get what we wanted. We thank her for that.

So we finish that and decide we're going to leave. We ask for separate checks and my single drink was $14!

The break down was $8 for the shot, $2 for rocks, and $4 for the extra pour!

I almost fell over! Who ever heard of charging for 'rocks'? Thats' ice cubes! And charging me for the 'extra pour' that I didn't even ask for?!?! I complained but she held fast. We paid the bill and I swear to God I'll never go back.

I've been to the same hotel since but didn't go near the bar. I've asked my FO's who have and they said it was fine...but that night dropped my jaw.

So, was that bartender a jerk?

(btw, this is mostly me just sharing a funny story)

I would have walked out RIGHT then....... No Jim :dunno:, No Jack :dunno:, Out of beer :dunno::dunno::dunno:..

That ain't no bar...:no::no::nono:

Cameron, do you just go out looking for jerks? Seems every third thread you start asks if someone is a jerk. But maybe it's just me....

Rule #82. Hotel bars are best avoided. Overpriced, and not all that fun to begin with.

As someone who occasionally bartends, I have to give my opinion. It sounds like she gave you a better price because she was a good bartender. It is not her fault the drinks were overpriced.

If I mow your lawn for $40 and show up a day late for whatever reason and proclaim that because I was late I also washed your car would it then be okay for me to charge you extra for the car wash?

That's the way I saw being charged for the 'extra pour'. I didn't ask for it but I was charged for it. Charging for 'rocks' was just the crazy icing on the cake.

It's a bit. It's just a way to start conversation. It also clearly identifies what the thread is going to be about and makes it REALLY easy to avoid if'n you don't like this sort of thing.

A captain and his first officer walk into a bar....

Oh wait, I misread the subject line; I thought it said "Is this a Bartender Joke?"
:wink2:

I thought he meant 'Jim' Beam. So, how do I go about collecting MY $20.00?

So how do I go about collecting my $20?

Jim, you have lead such a shelter life. Gambling is not your forte either huh?

You can't collect on he bet, you are the subject of the bet. It's like a race horse collecting the purse. .... Never mind.

Quit crying, pay the tab, drink somewhere else next time. If there's nowhere else, surely it can wait.

Come to Scandinavia sometime. You're filling out mortgage applications for beers.

You say that like it is something bad.

I bet you $20 it is my forte!

Well then, how does my wife go about collecting the $20?

Wilbur!

I would have walked up to the front desk and discussed that with the manager.

Membership has its privileges. Hopefully the manager knows what a Centurion card is. I've run into a few that didn't...briefly :)

Singapore, too. Amazing how much they value a pint of beer there. I almost had one with dinner last night after getting home just to enjoy the more "reasonable" price at Red Robin. :D

I really like the hotel bars in Ireland. At closing time they kick you out, follow you to the hotel lobby, and ask if you want another drink.

At another hotel bar in Ireland, the bartender vanished so we ended up pouring our own Guinness. When he finally returned, he reprimanded us for not pouring a proper Guinness, demonstrated the proper technique, and vanished for the rest of the night (actually it was morning).

Duly noted. In some countries, notably Germany, bars have to legally be part of a hotel establishment (or so was the case when I was there).

Know what's funny?

When I was in the Navy we'd pull into various ports and beer was always the common denominator. The exchange rate could be 5 rumpies to the dollar or 5 million rumpies to the dollar. It doesn't mean anything until you figure out how many rumpies it takes to buy something and that something was always beer.

So, the exchange rate is 5 rumpies to the dollar? Okay, how many rumpies to buy a beer? If it's 10 then that's a great port call on the horizon. If the exchange rate is 500,000 rumpies to the dollar but a beer costs 5 million rumpies then that's going to be a rough port of call. Can't imagine how much the bar fines are going to be...

Anyway, the point is beer was always the yard stick that we used to measure an exchange rate.

Singapore is an interesting place, you can pay $10 or $1.25 depending on where you buy it. Trick is to go to a neighborhood, have your dinner and beers for $5 before you go to Four Floors of Whores.;)

When I read "hooked us up" I assumed it was that your round was on the house, not hey, I charged you for the rocks.
