Just got an email from the iTunes Store that the Star Wars saga is available for download. Click on it and it comes up with $90. Now, I realize that's $15 a movie and not really unreasonable, however, when added to costs of other copies in other formats bought over the years, not to mention theatrical costs, it's a pretty good add onto what is already a pretty decent lifetime Star Wars bottom line. Now granted, I'm nowhere near what the die hards are at, and I realize that since I'm buying a cloud resource from Apple, it is likely the last time I will pay for it, but still I'm torn.

I'll probably end up downloading them anyway.

Never seen any of them. So my answer is "no"

Really, huh. They really are classics in cinematography and the evolution of movie technology since they were each revolutionary in their era, plus the stories aren't bad, especially the incest lol. Tron is the original Digital Enhancement movie that is a should see as well.

Nope. Never seen Star Trek, LOTR etc.. either. SciFi isn't my cup of tea. I'm more of a Terrantino/Alfred Hitchcock type fan.

Gotcha. Coming from a photography and lab back ground, I enjoy any really good cinematography regardless, plus I am a Sci FI fan.:D Even so, I think Outsiders still takes my win for all around best movie ever, with a close second of the Directors Cut of Apocalypse now. Coppola really has a superb mastery of light.

Agree. I like kubricks stuff too. How Barry Lydon was shot is interesting.

To me, all the Star Wars stuff is a lot of nice special effects looking for a story. They're just too simplistic to hold my attention. So, I'd vote no.

Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at, and without the big screen the effects are greatly diminished.

I can't believe after all these years they still get that kind of money for old movies.... heck I can't believe they get the kind of money they do for new releases.

I was expecting a $7.99 per price tag/$49.99 set level pricing. This franchise has far exceeded the need to to keep charging at this level, especially since most every copy will go to a multi copy buyer.

You can't 'rip' them from whatever sources you have already and put them into the itunes that way somehow? There should be a way, if you have them on dvd or blu-ray.

I don't use itunes so maybe not. You gotta love how they find new ways to recharge you for the same stuff over and over, vhs -> laserdisc(anyone? haha) -> DVD -> Blu-ray -> cloud

I haven't owned a physical copy in a long time, and many of the copies I have bought have been for yacht libraries. Over the years I've probably bought a couple dozen copies. I have ripped copies, but they don't have any of the extra features, and they aren't HD. The only reason I consider buying is to upgrade to HD and get the technical extra features.

There's 2.5 Star Wars movie.
Half of Jedi is crap because Bozo Lucas dumped Gary Kurtz and the toy and yes men era began for him.

Prequels are a mess. Nothing much there to give a damn about.

Don't even get me started on the Disneyfied JJ Abrams Wars drivel coming soon to a theater near you that the masses will no doubt slop up watching Geezer Solo.

So uh, yeah.. NO.
Don't buy them.

I had always kind of half hoped someone would try Niven's universe, but it would require a freakin genius to pull it off and not have it suck.

George Lucas is like that horrible girlfriend that you just keep forgiving for taking your money, cheating and lying because she's fantastic in bed and you're just soo sure she'll "come around".. Ha!

I think this would have been the third time I gave that man $100 for copies of his movies. I just broke up with him, and I feel great! I may actually still have my VHS box set. ;p

Not a Star Wars fan but I would say no to cloud versions. Best Buy's new ad today has the Blu-Ray pack of 6 movies and lots of extras for $89.99. I would buy that before I bought a cloud copy.

See, I see value in the cloud copy (the movies I get from iTunes have the extra features) in that the medium isn't going to expire and I will never buy another. Even DVDs don't last forever physically.

I don't trust the cloud copies to be around when I am 90. :D In about 45 years. :(

Physical media copies you own now will be useless long before then.

But the difference is, you don't actually own the cloud copies. They can technically take those away at any time. And if something happens to your iTunes account, you lose access or something for some reason they're gone.

I buy physical copies on occasion now when there's a movie worth buying, I'm not always looking for cinematic masterpieces, just something entertaining. I have a small server box in my office with mirrored 3TB hard drives (almost full) that I rip the movies to. The server is running Plex Media Server so I can stream the movies to whatever device in my house I want, including my chromecast that's plugged into my tv. Works nicely, and I'm also not relying on my internet working to watch my movies.

I don't watch my movies on cloud, I down load them onto my laptop and back them onto a portable as well. When I'm going on a trip I'll load some thing to watch underway on my iPad.

I have physical media copies on drives and devices, but I also have a backed up source on Apple/Cloud servers so I have the ability to swap out what movies I have with me on my device from my hotel room or even McDonalds during lunch given current speeds.

I'll probably buy the $90 set just to have. I've been hesitant over the years to purchase the dvd's waiting for a complete set. Right now the only Star Wars films I own are a boxed set of the original movies on VHS tapes with no VHS player.....

Ummm, (and I have to throw in an um to make a minimum character count), no.

JJ Abrams blech. Ruined Star Trek.

Yeah like "Dune".

...in which they tried to cram a two-inch-thick book into a standard-length movie? Jumble jumble worm worm muad dib worm sand dust ... "Because.... he IS the Kwisatz Haderach!" - glory music fade to credits...

If I had not read the book, I'd have had less than no clue what was going on.

But, I did have a newfound respect for worms. :D

Exactly, probably the most perfect example. You just can't condense to a 2-3 hr movie and make it work. All you end up with is a confusing, disjointed, flowing mosaic of effects. Most any good SciFi requires a series to be good, typically you could make a season is out of a chapter of most good stuff.

Yep. Total disrespect for the meaning of the original series, slapped some labels on, splosions! fighting! throw in some character impersonations and poured out the slop into the trough.
Granted many of the previous movies were terrible as well so getting let down by the films is nothing new.

Hopefully Trek can get back to it's intellectual roots on TV again someday
in the true spirit of the original series.

Not to mention the incessant "lens flare" effects. Unwatchable.

Ahhhhhhh, Star Wars 1977 ... the original.

There were two versions. Star Wars and ..

Star Wars on weed! :lol::rockon:

Depending on the prints you saw in 77, there were slight differences.
