My flying club has a sim (I can not remember the name) that is used for IR training. I am out of currency & proficiency and I wanted to do an IPC in the sim. I know I did several of them in the past in the sim, but now the few -IIs in the club say the circling approach requires it to be done in a plane. Is this a new requirement? The sim is free so that is a nice touch. Thanks

Not new. What sims (using the term generically) may be used for is part of their Letter of Authorization approval. Most are not approved for circle-to-land. You need to look at the one for the sim you are using. That hasn't changed. What did change - and that was more than 10 years ago - was that certain maneuvers, including the circling approach, are required for an IPC

Thanks Mark. Btw, where in NC are you based? I used to live in Greensboro and my brother lives in Cary.

Let me know if you come for a visit. I'm just south of Chapel Hill. Based at KTTA although I also fly out of KRDU.

Sounds good. I used to visit Sanford airport back in the early 90s. Did you take te NC bar?

Note that any maneuvers authorized for the sim can be completed in the sim for an IPC. The rest (probably just the circle-to-land) need to be completed in the airplane. Splitting the IPC this way is acceptable.

At least as far as the FA is concerned. Convincing dyed-in-the-wool CFIIs is another matter entirely.

No bar exam. I qualified to be licensed here without taking the bar exam. I did have to take the ethics test though (there's a good lawyer joke in there).

I should look into that; we are thinking about opening an office in NC and the thought of not taking another bar exam is nice. I'll shoot you a OM when I am in the area.

Some sims with the large visual screens outside the cockpit can be certified for IPC. You need large or wrap around screens to support the circle to land maneuver, able to keep an eye on the runway while maneuvering.

Interestingly, the full motion Redbird is not certified for circle-to-land approaches.

And the FMX has ~220 deg field of view, which you'd think would be enough.

The vertical field of view, however, is not terrific. Once you drop or raise a wing, the ability to visually acquire the field off to the side becomes a challenge. That might be the underlying cause, but I'm not sure.
