A friend of mine has a first Gen SR20 which developed a cracked case, pretty much in the exact spot most of its cousins did (right front). He's recovering well from the smelling salts and trying to make sense of his options.

One source suggested he could get by with replacing the cover (half the case?) but that sort of thing is way beyond my pay grade. Any knowledgable grey-hairs here have considered opinions about that kind of surgery, other than the obvious orders of magnitude lower cost?

I’m in the same situation, engine cracked last week. My current shop is great but wants me to put on a remanufactured engine at great cost. I’m exploring just replacing the crank case.

Hope it is truly a cracked case. Local mechanics told me mine was cracked and I'd need a new engine a few years ago on my Tiger. Sent photos to FletchAIR Texas and Zephyr Engines in Florida. They actually called each other and laughed calling me back because one they consulted each other to be sure and two they both agreed is was a casting mark from when the engine case was made. Did some additional testing at a different shop to confirm. Down and dirty simple test prior to doing the expensive penetration test is to clean it, put baby powder on it and see if it changes.

Divco looks, great, thank you. It's definitely cracked; there was an impressive streak of oil coming out of the "wound".

I had a 6” crack in the top part of my O-360 ten years ago at about 1400 hours (but 19 years). Also had a flat #3 cylinder on compression check. Went with a PennYan overhaul and they charged me about $2200 for the case core. It wasn’t a bad deal, IMHO.

Divco is definitely top notch but they’re way backlogged, from what I hear. An engine shop told me six of the twelve months to get my current engine overhauled would be the time at Divco.

Cases are usually in pairs. Ground flat and line bored for camshaft. Then deck height check to see if still in spec.

Sometimes (probably not lately) Divco have overhauled cases on the shelf.

Just replacing the cracked half means a full teardown and machine matching. Same labor as an overhaul. False economy. Buy a complete overhauled case.
But it costs 10% less to do only half of the job.

I'd never want a CPA who was a pilot. Pilot math is terrifying sometimes :)

Under 500 even I believe. greatly appreciate all the feedback!

They are, but when I did my OH last year DivCo would expedite the work for an additional fee. An extra $300 got me a 6 week turnaround. It might be worse now, but it'd be worth asking.

Similar scenario (broken thrustuds in my case, though the resistance offered by mx providers and the economics arguments regarding IRAN was exactly the same as you're getting on here) which drove me out the space in 2023.

Grab ankles, "get rich, poor" is all he'll get on this front. Good luck to your friend moving forward. He's gonna buy a new car, get told he won't get it for 10 months cuz he's small fry book customer, and then get effectively zero warranty of consequence for the new car expense. Yippee!

Send it in for an IRAN with only 500 hours on it. Most of the time a good engine shop can weld it. You'll get it back with new gaskets and bearings. The only replace what is needed. I recommend using Western Skyways or Penn Yan.

lmao, neither vendor you cite will entertain that. Not conjecture I asked. Yes, dated, 2023. Things have got worse on the lead times since then, not better like the "this is fine dog" types lead you to believe. Caveat emptor to the OP's friend.

Sounds like Disneyland/world. The admission ticket just gets you the opportunity to pay more to move to the head of the line.

Sounds like four day old lukewarm truck stop sushi...

Any AnP can IRAN. Sending it to a shop is just the standard regurgitated response (search PoA and see how shops make mistakes also). Any AnP can swap the case. If there are any data plates, make sure you comply with FAR 45.13(c).

You are looking at the cost of a case, labor to swap engine, labor to IRAN, and required replacement parts.

There are a lot of shops that don't split case just because of the liability. We will pull cylinders and whatever but splitting that case is a whole different can of worms.
