Check this video out about JAL CEO. The big three should take some notes. Some things I caught:

Public Transportation to and from work
Cafeteria Food for lunch and pays for it
Salary less than senior pilots

I have to hand it to him.

Is JAL a government owned airline?

There is so much bull@hit in corporate America. The executive lunchroom. The executive elevator, The executive parking spot. The executive jet (all of which the parent co of my former employer, PG&E, had).

I worked on a consulting job years ago, after college, at a mfg plant in Ambridge PA. What really stuck with me was that the plant manager and asst plant manager got reserved parking spots by the front door. There were only 50 or so spots there, it wasn't a big factory, it just killed me to see the message that sent. I was only 23 and a punk-ass recent college grad and I knew what that was telling the rank and file. I saw the same thing when I taught high school. The principal and 2 asst principals had reserved parking out front. Small minds need to remind others of their importance through such bogus bull$hit.

We got rid of executive parking spots. I miss mine. We now only have corporate VP indoor parking. But not all perks are bad. Some though are.

The Honda Aircraft CEO does not have an office; all of the desks are in an open room. He has the same kind of desk as everyone else. Email him and he answers, not a secretary.

Egalitarianism simply seems to fit Japanese culture, whereas so many Americans are just posers.

Funny, because growing up I always saw the Japanese culture as being very stratified and "classist". But perhaps these were the much older people who were raised pre WWII in the "old country". Of course there is that old saying that a nail that sticks out will be hammered down. They are more into conformity than US culture.

There are still st ratifications and classes. As I am sure you know Japanese social structure is a lot different than ours. While CEOs are held to salary's that are not as high via percentage to average worker wages as we see in the US they are given some good perks e.g. jets, apartments in Tokyo that are huge, boats, overseas goodies, etc.

Reserved parking spaces for bigwigs? Private offices? Not here, man. Paul Otellini can take his chances on a parking space along with the rest of us. But I would like to have his paycheck. :D
