I went to do an inflight LOP mag check the other day after some engine work during annual. 55% power LOP. EGT were around 14240-1450 and CHT comfortably mid 300s. Surefly mag looked great. Switched to right mag and EGT jumped considerably with several crossing 1500 and one started pushing 1600. No CHT change and no roughness other than noticeable power loss. Didn’t risk it more than a few seconds. Mag was IRAN about 150h ago and has functioned well on the ground. Fine wire tempest plugs. IO540 K1G5. So how comfortable are you going above 1500 EGT on this check? Mike Bush recommend it as a better test than run up mag check but other than obvious roughness or a cylinder dropping out what am I looking for?

Sounds like it’s working exactly like it should.

The EGT’s are supposed to rise, so that’s normal, and those numbers wouldn’t concern me. As long as they rise, stabilize and the engine runs smoothly while doing so, then your ignition system should be happy. By what you’ve said, it sounds normal.
