I'm thinking to hard... 177B vs. 182

Don't forget the limits of the 1968 150 horse 177, be careful which 177 you buy, several do not have the capabilities that the later models do, read "Standard Catalog of CESSNA Single Engine Aircraft". both aircraft are there with the loads and speeds.

a 177 isn't a 182 neither will do book figures on a hot day.

A good point about the 150hp but a lot of the 68's I've seen have the 180 conversion and the Cardinal Rule modifications.

You can certainly slow a 182 to 177 speeds and save a lot of gas, but the reverse isn't possible. You couldn't make a 177 go 130 knots in cruise without putting JATO bottles on it. As I said, the 177B will go 10% slower on 20% less gas at normal cruise.
I agree. The 177B that I rode in got 120-130 mph (not knots) in normal cruise. An RG with a good airframe and young engine should easily cruise at 130 knots. Then again I know a 182 (fixed gear) with a good airframe that cruises at 140 knots.

As much as I love my Cardinal, I think the 182 is the more capable airplane.

Like you, I was drawn to the sleek Cardinal. I considered getting a 177RG instead of my 182. If I had found the right one, I might have. But there are a lot more 182s to pick and choose from than 177s.
I was just the opposite. I was drawn to the 182RG not the Cardinal. And there were a lot of them. But the right 177RG came along, and I jumped on it. The draw was the avionics package, which I could NOT have afforded to add myself. Otherwise, I would almost certainly have gone with a 182, most likely an RG.

I'd be certain to factor the cost of 2010 compliance with ADSB-out. Most of the /A birds that haven't kept up, will requires a five digit investment rather than just a squitter.

ADSB isn't due until 2020, correct? So it could be part of the upgrade plan?

Folks love their Cardinals well enough, but Cessna hasn't seen to make them in decades. They make 182's to this day. Speaks volumes to me.

i'm pretty sure Cessna is on record saying that getting the cantilevered winged birds to meet Part 23 was why they didn't bring the 210 and 177 back.

If you are considering 182's; include the 205 in your search. Generally; 205's are
priced somewhat like 182's and ...

- When you remove seats 5 & 6, you get a cavernous baggage compartment
- A usable baggage door.
- Fuel injection rather the the ice-maker that equips the 182's
