I have a therory on ignoring people on this (or any other really) forum. I think it actually adds to the angst rather than lower the angst as is intended.

Here's my logic; if you ignor someone my understanding is that persons posts are blanked out but if someone else quotes that ignored member then you see the previously blanked post unless on the off chance you've ignored that person as well.

My therory is that a higher percentage of a persons more controversial posts will be quoted. So, if bob is ignored and bob posts 98 supportive posts and 2 that could be viewed as 'mean' it's those two mean posts that are more likely to be quoted and viewed by the ignoring member.

This disproportionate viewing simply reinforces the belief that bob is a jerk and adds to forum angst.

Obviously I'm aware of certian folks campaign to get others to ignore me and others here. That's fine and my first thought was 'good riddance'. But further thought on he subject has me re-thinking that position.

By all means, if you want to ignore me or anyone else then go right ahead. My feeling won't be hurt in the least (obviously you wouldn't care either way) but I thought I'd just offer another perspective you may not of thought about.

Say, could someone quote this post so those I'm speaking to can get the message?

But I like Bob! :D

I really don't know what purpose the ignore feature serves anyway. There are members here that I don't care to pay attention to or initiate dialog with, so, I simply don't pay attention to or initiate dialog with them. Personally I think selective deletion of board content just adds to confusion.

If someone gets so worked up over another's post on an internet message board to the point where they need the board software to remove those posts from view, well, they should probably find another pursuit for their spare time.

LOL! Here's my take on the subject:

If you take any of this seriously enough to get upset to the point of taking step of action to avoid seeing something someone has written, well, that's nuts.

When you make an effort to ignore someones posts, that is an indicator you have issues that your life would probably be more pleasant if you went to a pro and worked them out.

There are a few sad, lonely souls who live here instead of enjoying all the other things life has to offer, including much flying it would appear. They feel they have a useful opinion on every subject, and I mean EVERY subject. Well, they don't. :nono: :nonod:
The ignore function works very well for them and keeps the scrolling down to a minimum! Use it on me at any time you like. I find your contributions interesting. Sorry Captain, that probably won't help your cause.....:D

One doesn't need a button to ignore another on the internet. Were it only so easily accomplished in vivo.

i always figured that if i put some people on ignore i would miss out on all the fun

Translation: Captain thinks that his desire is more important than someone else's desire.

I am fairly new to this interwebby forum stuff, but I am amazed that anyone actually thinks this is more than an information exchange and social interaction. I say what I think, and if some don't like it, I could care less. If someone chooses to attack me I am nothing but amazed that they think I would give a dead rat's butt what they think about me.

I have discovered over the years that some people need validation from everyone they encounter, no matter how stupid their actions or words. I don't have time for that. I am sure that over time I will discover those here who have something valid to say and learn to count them as friends if they grace me with that honor. As for the rest, LIGHTEN UP

I thought about that and almost left it out. I figured it would probably be quoted anyway. In the end I got tired of debating with myself and left it in.

I do promise that was a one time message to those who choose to ignore me. Your assessment is wrong, I do not put my want above anybody else's (my kids excluded)

; )

Wiser words have not been spoken!

Another self-justification thread. What a surprise.

You seem to be assuming that a person who has you on ignore would open a thread started by you.

I have ignored only one person here, who continually posted thoughtless, outrageous comments in the SZ and didn't seem to have much to say about flying. Unfortunately it did not work, as other members frequently quoted his absurd posts and I wound up reading them anyway.

I can say I've never ignored someone on the forum or any forum.

Ah yes, speaking of those with an opinion on EVERYTHING and snide remarks to anybody that disagrees with said opinion.....:mad2:

Flame on groupies

I suspect I know who you mean (unless you're referring to yours truly, of course) and I rather ignored him as well, though not with a button. When I saw his posts I would skip through the invective to see if there was an reasonable point being made.

A pity he was so full of invective. A really bright and knowledgable guy who just couldn't play with others.

Okay then, which office are you running for and do you have a party affiliation?

Yeah, 'cause clicking an option on a message board is SO much work!

Amateur psychoanalysis over the Internet is almost as foolish as trying to judge a person's piloting ability over the Internet.

Yeah, 'cause clicking an option on a message board is SO much work!

It is though! Look how many threads there are that deal with 'ignoring'.

By definition 'ignoring' is passive, not something we must seek out to do.

Frankly, I think this is a really funny thread. For awhile I used to get the two guys quoted above mixed up (and would have to look at the avatar to know the difference); I thought they were the same guy for awhile:dunno:
:D

Sometimes (as in not always) ignoring someone who irks you will result in disservice to you. Maybe some folks come across gentler than others and vice versa, but even the abrasive can have a valid point you just didn't want to hear, or get in the manner it was conveyed.
And hey, I'll admit I am one of those guys who doesn't add much at all about flying, but it's because I know my place and have yet to get going on my training. I still read threads, especially in "training" and pay attention to them, but I personally feel I am not yet qualified to really speak up yet and therefore won't in those threads.

Well hats a shame Lawn Dart. I dOnt think anyone has a 'place' here. We all have an Internet connection and an opinion. You know when you have an opinion that contributes. I say let it fly. If its wrong I promise others on this board will point it out and discussion will ensue.

I've learned a lot about flying on this forum. There an amazing knowledge base out there.

Well, I take pride in being able to see the good intentions of others even when others don't. Some folks don't know how to convey their intent, good or bad, and some don't know how to take it. Frankly, this forum seems to be intended for those active in or actively pursuing aviation. I don't see how being an English or public speaking major is a given requirement. On the same token, I would think people who engage in aviation would have at least a marginal degree of toughness or *perseverance* to let snide remarks (intended or not) roll off their back. Come on, it's a kucfing internet forum.
Internet is a double-edged sword. We can communicate anywhere in the world with it, but at least on sites like this one, we sacrifice having a truly face-to-face discussion, which means little things like voice inflection for example, are left by the way side and words get taken out of context.

As for my lack of other contributions, that's just the way I am. I have more practical experience jumping from aircraft than actually piloting them (hence "Lawn Dart":D). It would be out of line for me to criticize somebody else's performance of a technique or manuever which I have yet to experience for myself, but that does not mean I won't learn something by reading about it and the critiques of others.

As for your controversial post, everybody has a friggin valid point, and I would think that if Sara beat the odds, so to speak, in getting her ticket, than g..damn it should take a helluva lot more than it did to make her rescind her offer to students. I've taught my fair share of "students" seeking to be proficient fire pump operators, and some take longer than others. That's a different world, sure, but everyone who puts the wet stuff on the red stuff counts on the pump operator to know what the hell they are doing, and nobody gets qualified that doesn't prove they do know what they're doing.

Isn't anyone going to respond to this thread, or at least someone should give an opening statement.....jeez. This could be interesting if there was at least some participation.

My input to the topic of ignoring members is, in a nutshell, everybody has an opinion, and ignoring somebody could later deny you of a perspective you had not considered.

So captain,
Why do you suppose so many people put you on ignore?

Do you go out of your way to offend people? Do you think you are too intolerant?

I have only read a few of your posts but that was not on purpose. I follow a few threads closely but if the title doesn't interest me, I have better things to do. You did annoy me a couple of times with your "what's that got to do with aviation" questions, but that didn't really amount to anything. And I followed your thread about dumping fuel over Miami for a while, but I didn't like the tone of some of the other people on that thread so drifted away.

So I am really curious; why do you thing people ignore you? Obviously you would prefer they not ignore you or you would not have started this thread in the first place.

Why do I suppose? Because people have said as much.

Do I care? Well I suppose nobody likes to be ignored. I know full well I've tweaked some beaks, but I've had some pretty good posts / threads too. In the end, if someone ignore me or anyone else there's nothing I can do about it. I just had a thought about unintended consequences of ignoring someone and though I'd share my therory.

A computer system designed for communication that allows blocking/ignoring without notifications that you've been blocked, is broken. That's a bug.

Tech solutions to human problems never work out in the end. They just escalate.

Someone will figure out they're being blocked, they'll register a new screen name and the responsibility will fall back on the system operators and mods (which is where it was to begin with) to look up IP addresses and challenge the bad behavior.

Seen that all happen before. Nothing new under the Sun.

All the tech solution does is slow the bad guy down. They're still going to behave badly. Bad behavior is bad behavior. The human solution is to ignore by not reading. Click, next thread. Easy. Built in solution.

Bad guys and good guys alike know how to get around a block, if they need to.

The trick is in removing the need. If you don't get riled up by them in the first place, or even read what they post, there's no need for tech tools at all.
