Got clearance for NOONE NELLO JILLIS KMOX

After NELLO, I was going direct to JILLIS and ATC said I was going the wrong way. I confirmed I was direct to JILLS. ATC said "OK, just to Direct to KMOX". After I was on course on AP, I looked again and then I saw it.

So, a guy with 250 + hours of IFR still can make a stupid mistake, and will now do the "Course Preview" in the GTN after I enter the flight plan to double check.

Good idea. Spelling counts and a reality check is a good thing.

BTW, if everyone here who made a mistake posted as Guest, we'd have no named members :D

"JILLIS?" Seems like an extra letter snuck-in on ya'. Some folks don't think that spelling is important, but maybe it is if you fly IFR.

Hey, you don't need 250 hours of IFR to make a stupid mistake--you can have 25,000 hrs and still make stupid mistakes. The key is never allowing ourselves to believe that a fat logbook somehow makes us immune to common human error tendencies.

Should have been JILIS presumably? Always good to confirm spelling and preview the route, for sure!

What were you flying? That's a pretty long leg.

Private ground school 101. The RNAV will take you anywhere you tell it. If you select Cairo, Egypt v Cairo, IL, you are going to be disappointed.

That said, you should have noticed the course was incorrect for your route. One fix is in Georgia the other Alabama, + 6 letter fix.

Your comment about reality check on the flight plan reminds me of something I heard way back when I was preparing for the private knowledge test. Most of the wrong answers on the cross country planning questions involved the applicant being 180 degrees off. IOW, the question is a flight from east to west, which could be easily see on the map, but comes up with headings and wind corrections for a flight from west to east.
