I want to buy your (used) tablet / netbook / laptop

So I got a computer!

Thank you everyone.

Though I wanted to spend under $200 I talked myself into more - since for only a bit more I can get a "real" laptop to replace my now old one which has already gone through a failure (bad internal hard drive I replaced myself, and bad / new battery).

I ended up getting the current special at Best Buy for $379 - the HP with the 17.3" screen. I just made my first video call on Skype and that was so awesome. Sound / speakers are OK, camera good, 4GB memory expandable to 8GB, 500GB Hard Drive, writes DVDs and CDs, only drawback is of course the AMD processor but I just looked and my 5 year old Compaq had an AMD too.

It is btwn 2-3 Ghz dual core I think.

Yay new computers! My BF has had 2 HP's and the current one cost him - I think - almost $1,000 or $2,000. Comparing mine to his I'd say mine wins. Sure it doesn't have the fancy buttons his has but it was only $379 and has more hard drive space etc.

Maybe now I can run a flight simulator? Do I need a joystick? Is this computer good enough?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 should run OK. But FS X might not run as smoohly since it is presumably more demanding.

A joystick is advisable but not, I believe, absolutely required.

I see no reason FSX wouldn't run (although I haven't bought MS FS since 2002 version).

BTW- for those that don't know, AMD is Da Bomb!

I never quite understand why PC manufactures feel a need to cover their laptops in stickers and advertisements. You'd think they'd want their products to look beautiful.

It's their mandatory Flair

:hairraise: Please tell me you managed to get out the door after only spending $379.

Yes, in and out in less than five minutes. They had ones which cost one hundred more since the "geek squad" took off all the crap and created a recovery disk for you.

Whatever, dude. I got home, created a recovery point, now I need to remove junk, create another recovery point, then I'll do the one time only recovery disk thingie. One hundred bucks, saved. I don't let sales people talk me into crap I don't want.

Because "Made for Windows 98!" stickers are making a comeback in the retro-tech steampunk scene? ;)

An old friend "debadged" his laptop and placed a sticker on the lid so it could be read if you were sitting across the conference room table from him...

"Go away, or I will replace you with a very small shell script."

;)

How ever will you get it to work without the $49 Monster USB cable?

and with no extended warranty it could die at a moments notice and it'll cost you $899 to fix it.

How old is your laptop? What year was it "new"?

Just in case someone else is interested, I think it's about 4 years old. It came with Vista so it can't be much older than that. It has a 1.73 GHz Intel T2080 processor (single core) and 1GB of RAM. Includes wireless networking, DVD writer, Firewire, 3 USB, Ethernet, and telephone (modem). It would run Windows 7 but probably not very fast. The model is Gateway MT6711 and the complete specs are here:

There's nothing wrong with it except that the battery is getting kinda wimpy. When new it was only good for a couple hours and now it's more like 30 minutes. A new battery is around $40. I've been going to put it on eBay but haven't gotten around to it.

Best Buy is also known to be "out of stock" on all of the laptops that don't have the $100 Geek Squad "optimization.

How did you know? I agree. I had to talk a girl into climbing up high on the ceiling to get me the non bundled one. What a game they have going there - they advertise plenty in stock for $379, I get there, and they have 2 left but the price has gone up $100 for this "service".

Um, hello, I came here for the $379 laptop, not for one that has already been opened and tinkered with!

Why? My screen is 2 inches bigger and I love HP products. My BF has had two of them and beat them up - the old one is still fine and almost 7 years old now (running Linux though).

I don't think I can go to Best Buy and say "I'm taking this back cuz I want the other one" once I've already started using it etc.

Yours has an intel processor and a fingerprint scanner. Other than that, what's the difference? Why is the Lenovo so cool to you?

Welp found and old laptop today, too late I s'pose.

I can't understand why every laptop is so completely different that you can't pull the motherboard out of one and drop it in another. Or that there are no upgrades for them. The laptop/notebook gets old or dies it's out to the store for a new one.
By the way, my last 3 were purchased from Amazon. I only ever go into a store to check out the new product. No carrying it home. Shipped right to the door.

@ Kimberly: Thanks for this thread. I just ordered the same unit from Best Buy.

@ SKYHOG: I didn't purchase the unit with aviation factors as prime reasons for use. However, what aviation programs are available for the laptop units?
Before the iPad units came on the market there were often posts re pilots carrying/using laptop computers.
And will the Dropbox you described in another thread be applicable to the laptop?

You could but the stuff might not fit real well. ;)

It takes some gyrations to drop a Ford transmission into a Chevy or vice-versa.

Cool, now we are twins! (Sort of?)

During the decades I've been known under various monikers, but Danny or Arnold isn't one of them. Below is a head shot from an "Oklahoma" production.

Harley, Lawreston, Jerry, Jerry Leyman, Hale Roth, (but "Don't call me Shirley.")

Does your "i" key work? It was driving me nuts and I finally decided to return it since I could not stop my "typing flow" to hit the "i" key 4 times until it worked. Funny thing, took my Mom on Black Friday, and we got a MUCH better one that was about $300 off. The original HP I bought was great with a huge screen (almost 18 inches) and it only cost me $379 - but for just $50 more at $429 we got a brushed steel one.

It has a smaller screen but weighs less, has quad core instead of dual core for the processor, has a fingerprint scanner, still has the webcam, and has "beats audio" this huge bass speaker thing in back. It is sooooo pretty with the brushed aluminum / steel / whatever. And for her, it still has the 10-key pad on the right, the touchpad is way better, and on and on.

Here is the new one:

HP Pavilion dv6-6108us Laptop Computer with 15.6in. LED-backlit Screen AMD Quad-core A6-3400M Accelerated Processor

HP - Notebook - 15.6 inch - 4 GB RAM - 640 GB disk - 5.3 hour battery

Offers extra power to handle today's complex software.

Features accelerated performance with peak speeds up to 2.3GHz (normally 1.4GHz).

Extra-large 4GB memory lets you run your most demanding programs.

640GB hard drive holds thousands of songs, photos and documents.

Wireless-N (802.11n) for high-performance, cable-free networking. Lets you access wireless networks to share files, surf the Web and exchange email. Fully compatible with 802.11b/g as well. Wired networking is supported, too.

LED backlighting permits a thinner and more energy-efficient screen.

Plays and burns CDs and DVDs.

Memory card reader for fast, easy photo transfers. Transfer your digital photos, music and other files from Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMediaCard (MMC) memory cards.

HDMI port lets you view videos and photos on your HDTV. (HDMI cable sold separately.)

USB 3.0 port allows transfers up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0. Also compatible with USB 2.0 devices.

Built-in HD webcam and microphone let you keep in touch with others via video and voice messaging.

Integrated numeric keypad speeds data entry and calculations.

Provides up to 5.3 hours of battery life on a single charge. The newest version of Windows makes everyday tasks simple. Made by HP

I can't find it online for less than $580 - we really got a deal. Even the keys are better made (they are tucked under a plastic thing, unlike the big HP whose keys' edges were exposed)

With just a few conversions you're ready to deal with aircraft maintenance as an owner. Imagine that you got something fixed for 3.79 AMU and for only 0.5 AMU more "while you were there" everything is now ready to go and updated. Of course, in the real world you just spent about $4,300 total for what turns out to be a periodic repair for a hobby aircraft...

I'm really just poking fun at myself - the Frankekota is in annual inspection and a few things are being replaced because I want them to be, not because condition requires. It's mostly cosmetic (chafed scat tube) but a little (new front tire/tube) is to prevent (maybe) mid-year downtime.

Thanks for the heads-up information. Mine is scheduled to arrive today(Dec. 01) and I'll be on the lookout for your observed problems.

Yeah, I hate it when my scat tube gets chafed.

It's amazing, it reads just like a book. The screen is almost like an etcha-sketch so it just updates when you 'turn the page.' Its very easy on the eye, reads like reading a piece of paper. And the batterie lasts for like a month. Charges in 4 hours. You could even read it constantly for like two days straight without sleeping or recharging the battery. Its like a magic book with your whole library. I bought the touch 3G without ads which was $10 less than the fire. I debated between the fire and the touch3G for about a week. The fire is more like an iPad, its an Android tablet in reality. But the Kindle Touch is a much better technology for reading. I'm glad I chose this.

December 12; and in Maine -- no sign of snow on the ground; I'm still raking leaves and hauling them away. This is my first log-in with the Pavilion g7-1277dx Notebook PC that Kimberly wrote about and bought and instigated me to order from the same source. It takes a while to get used to the handling of it, particularly moving the cursor without a traditional mouse; not to mention the two cats deciding they want to help.
