So I was going to simply look on Craigslist and meet somebody local, but then I figured I should ask here.

Does anyone have an old tablet / laptop / netbook ?

I just need to browse the web, download files, etc.

I have no idea what they cost new - I guess if they can be had for less than $200 I should simply wait for the famous "Cyber Monday" or whatever.

Does anyone have anything like this to sell for cheap?

Kim, I already gave a way my one surplus laptop, or you would have gotten it.

But you can buy new ones for slightly more than nothing.

You prefer a laptop or a tablet? If you want to download stuff, basic laptop's the drill. I'll shop for yez...

The new Kindle Fire is being sold for $200:

Spike, that is ok - you don't have to spend your time "shopping" for me - laptops aren't less than $200 are they? Where have I been? My laptop is SUPER old and cost (open box at Fry's) about $600 years ago.

I've got an older Gateway laptop you can have for half of that. It was my daughter's computer but she decided it was too big (15") to carry around at College.

Laptops have come WAY down in price, if you don't need a screamer gaming rig or whatever.

Check NewEgg.com and Microcenter.com.

Not sure if it has:

Microsoft Office

USB ports

CD Drive

Card Reader (SD)

Etc.
I'm pretty sure it has none of those. Also you should be aware that most if not all of the current crop of "Netbooks" use an Atom CPU which has pretty limited processing capacity compared to a laptop. The Netbooks are a lot handier if all you want to do is email and web browsing but they don't do Office very well AFaIK.

How old is your laptop? What year was it "new"?

Here in Atlanta, we have resellers that take off-lease PC's and check them out, then sell them at pretty low prices. These are PC from now defunct companies and those companies that lease their hardware and have automatic upgrade contracts. I have bought about a dozen over the past few years with good success.
See this:

I'll bet that there are similar places in Ca.

My netbook does Office 2003 just fine. But I don't do complex spreadsheets.

OK so I caved in and looked at Craigslist.

Close to me / etc:

1. For Sale IBM Thinkpad T-22 Laptop Computer in EXCELLENT Condition.
Win 2000 Pro SP4 - (Requires less HD memory and RAM than XP but uses the same NT platform) with both backup CDs and floppies

$85

2. Offering a Compaq Evo N600c Laptop for sale has Windows 7 installed

$145

3. PowerBook G4 15.2" Laptop, 400MHz, 640MB, 30GB, OSX, price reduced! - $50

OSX 10.4.11 (Tiger) is as good as it gets for a 400Mhz G4!

(ooooh a Mac - that would be "interesting" - I haven't used one in ages)

4. Dell Latitude D830 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz 4GB RAM 15" WSXGA+ Laptop - $260

Comes w/warranty from a place that does lease buy backs.

Which is good? I have no clue.

I've bought them too. See above, I found a place, they have one for less than $300 though at those prices I could go to Costco and get a PINK netbook (yes I love pink). Though it doesn't have a CD drive, I can always buy an external one if I really had to.

Looks like I just missed this huge deal at Costco, online and in stores are sold out:

$249.99 after $100 OFF
Out of Stock
Acer® Aspire One AO722 Laptop
AMD Dual-Core C-60 1.0GHz
ATI Radeon™ Graphics

0.3MP Webcam and Digital Microphone
802.11 b/g/n WLAN
6-cell Battery

That's the one I was referring to.

Target had these on sale last week for $197. They were all sold out at my store Sunday morning!

I got one, and it is a very capable machine.

Kimberly,

Some advice from a geek who can and has done it.

You'll be better off with a new sub-$300 laptop than anything even a few years old. Any new PC will have more RAM and better CPU to run Windows 7 (or any other OS) better.

What you'll save by using old hardware will be lost in the hours you'll spend upgrading it and getting it working. We enjoy the challenge. It's not so much fun when you have better things to do.

Just make sure you get at least a 90 day warranty so if it has bad hard rive or something else it will be replaced. If it works for 90 days it shoudl be good for years.

Read the user reviews, on NewEgg, Woot or Amazon to make sure it isn't a turkey in the first place.

I agree. I am re-thinking asking for "old stuff". As I started to research the deals on Craigslist, I realized they were hiding the true age of the computer. Many don't have the disks, passwords, etc. and these machines are 4+ years old. That is the age when they start to get those "strange" problems that simply drive you crazy like mouse buttons doing weird things, freezing / slowness, etc.

I should probably just wait until "Cyber Monday" though in searching eBay the Acer deal at Costco could not be beat. Too bad I missed it.

Wow, new egg had a lot of deals but I am noticing "open box" and "refurbished" cheaper ones are actually many years old or "not guaranteed".

NewEgg does have great prices, I think I'll be buying from them, or from Costco, or if HP does that coupon thing again on Cyber Monday, then from HP / Dell / manufacturer site directly.

I have a Pandigital Novel droid based e-reader I used to use for websurfing, etc and I used to put a few aviation charts on it until I got my iPad+ FF.

I don't use it anymore and I think I still have the box, etc. I paid ~$200 for it about 6 mos ago. PM me if you want it.

Cool, I will send a PM.

Another funny thing - I was on the phone with Dell today and I asked if I should wait for "Cyber Monday".

They said no, their special prices are already in affect.

Just thought I'd pass that information on. She told me that she would email me the "link" that would get me to these deals, not sure if that means I cannot get to them simply by going to the Dell site.

There's Dell Home and Dell Small business and they're run like seperate stores.

We can get Dell Business EBP deals from work, but the sale prices are aways better.

Just keep watching http://www.Slickdeals.net and jump on a deal when it gets posted. They tend to go out of stock fast once the word gets out. BUT you'll be much better off with a Lenovo or HP (while you can get them) over a Dell.

Or you can map a network drive. I.e the netbook uses the cd drive on your home computer across your home network. It's not rocket science.

Not if you are running Windows 7 Starter.
It's disabled. You can "Upgrade it for just $80 more".....
