That is all.

Okay, so last night I got the go ahead for lunch w/friend. Lunch w/friend means I go in to the office, which is a half hour away with no traffic, and an hour with. I was conflicted. Today would be a good bike riding day. I gave up a good bike riding today to have lunch w/friend. Lunch w/friend texted and canceled saying a meeting popped up but I'm already in the office.

I know, what does this have to do with coffee.

If I don't go in to the office, I go to the store next to the gym and get a coffee. Which... I don't like. They have Peet's coffee. I f****g hate Peet's coffee. It's bitter. In the last few months I've switched to iced Americano because it's slightly easier to drink than their brewed coffee or their cold brew, and even then I sort of need a shot of sugar free vanilla to tone it down. But, if I buy ten of them, I get one free, so, on my free ones, I get an extra large vanilla latte. $$$$$. But it's yummy because the bitterness of their horrid coffee is buried.

Well I'm at the office now. They have all kinds of espresso machines and brewing machines and also a Keurig. The Keurig has Duncan Donuts coffee in pods. Duncan Donuts coffee in pods is quite pleasant and not bitter at all. I like Duncan Donut coffee in pods. In fact I just finished one.

I'm leading up to a bright side here.

Although I'm somewhat miffed at the lunch/w flaky friend situation, I a) got to have tasty coffee, and b) was alerted sufficiently early so I can head back and do a bike ride. I already did what I needed to do at the office anyway.

I'm curious which Peet's roast they were serving you. The French Roast, yeah, it's burnt, same as Starbucks Pike's Place. Peet's Major Dickinson is my go-to for an expresso/americano/drip. Dark, but not burnt. I believe the chains all default to an over-roasted coffee to make it easier to be consistent. Since the majority of Americans just dump a ton of sugar, cream and flavors into their drink it is easier to have a consistent taste across stores when your base coffee is a bit overdone.

I drink 20 oz of pikes place black everyday.
20-year habit

Sac, you have much pent up hatred. Hatred is a bitter pill. I might suggest more therapy on wheels.

Wait. Wheel therapy means saddle time; maybe you need a new saddle and bibs to prevent chafing which could the source of hatred and bitterness.

Life's too short to drink ****ty coffee. If your coffee tastes like a car tire, you've been drinking ****ty coffee (or it's being brewed by someone who doesn't know what they're doing).

There must be a lot of that in the world then. :D The closest coffee I can get to choking down is a Flat White Espresso, which I think is just a milkshake with extra steps.

I hatred any coffee of any kind, as well as any other drink that has caffeine in it, also sugar, calories and sodium.

Also, I was asked to make coffee once at the airport, then I was never asked again...

I only buy import Brazilian coffee. But I'm good with certain Costa Rican and Colombian blends. I can't stand the acidity of SE Asian or African products.

Was in South America for a few weeks for work not too long ago... yes, the coffee is different... it was "effing" awesome... the best place was in Buenos Aries.. my hang out for about a week. I bougt some coffe home with me and have been trying to replicate it... I am thinking it is the water.

As for Peets, and the others... they are noting more than a glorified McDonalds..

Pleading the fifth.

Excuse me, you spelt Guilty wrong :D

30 pounds of pre-tariff green coffee beans arrived yesterday. I think I'll pull an espresso, sit back, and watch this thread spiral.

Nauga,
who knows the revolution will be caffeinated
Good idea.

Along those lines, I generally find coffee in PR China to be good. I haven't been to Luckins or Starbucks over there- I have whatever they give me in the office. It comes from Yunnan province. I asked where they got it because I thought they sourced it from Vietnam.

I've had Vietnamese coffee and I agree with you, at least the two times I've had it (not very statistically significant). It was different from what I had in China.

That's odd. I've had great luck with Vietnamese coffee. At least the French filter style.

That would have paid for about $30k worth of avgas…
Reminds me of the old canard about smoking:

"You smoke 2 packs a day * $XX per pack * 365 days a year * 20 years, and you could have had over six figures; enough money to buy your own airplane."
"Do you smoke?"
"No."
"Where's your airplane?"

I prefer a medium-light roast, brazilian beans. 10g of coffee to each 8oz cup of water, medium-fine grind.

The major coffee shops can keep their over-roasted, burnt-tasting "french roast" junk.

I'm not really picky, though.

I find all the starbux brews to be bitter. Not a fan. The only good thing in my opinion about starbux is that it's consistent and more drinkable than fast food coffee

Peet's Major Dickinson's in a K cup is my daily brew.
It's not what I would say is the best coffee I've had, but it's the best K-cup I've found, and I've tried a lot of different ones.

Recently, I got an aeropress go as a travel brew. I've grown tired of the impossible task of finding a drinkable cup when travelling. I tried it with some Gevalia dark blend, I don't recall the name off-hand, but it was a pretty good brew.

side note: weird I know, but I've enjoyed my coffee a lot more since I started brewing in an egg and butter, and using one of those powered milk frother wisks to emulsify it. Makes it a thicker cremier brew for sure.

I think all starbucks coffee taste burned.
I might just ban you for this! ;)

Starbucks is my favorite. A black Pike roast or the Yukon… the best. Call me crazy but I like bitter coffee.

This is the place to explain why we wash eggs.

Place the coffee pot on the hot part of the stove, with the number of cups of water, plus 1, that you want of coffee.
When actively boiling, drop the shells from the eggs (just fried) into the pot, followed by the proper measure of Maxwell House coffee
In one minute of boiling, move pot to a warm place on the stove, and allow the grounds to settle.
Gently pour coffee into prewarmed mugs or cups, as your style requires
That was what my Dad called the best boiled coffee made, his daily drink in the morning.

Smelled great to me back when I was pre 10, and still living in the country.

The eggshells neutralized the acid in the coffee, thus no cream or sugar added, just great coffee.

Similarly great made over a campfire.

You forgot the right option for me: "I like a little coffee with my cream and sugar."

Black coffee is a vile substance.

Of course, this preference probably comes from the fact that my parents don't drink coffee, so my first intro to the flavor of coffee was coffee ice cream. And, of course, walking past Gloria Jean's in the mall, which was definitely not bitter.

Starbucks nearly everyday for the last 20y for me. Doesn't need to be the best, just consistent. And consistent it is. I know exactly what my iced Americano is going to be every time.

I will freely go other places too, I just can't break the long term SBUX habit. I've tried, but I always come back to it.

I prefer French or Italian roast. It’s hard to find whole bean coffee in anything besides Starbucks or a couple other mass-market brands around here. I was spoiled where we came from on California’s Central Coast. I got hooked on fresh locally-roasted French roast before I was out of high school in the mid 80s. Grocery stores there sell some small local or regional brands. I should just bite the bullet and pay to get it shipped.

I like my coffee as black as a moonless midnight and as strong as an angry Marine (I realize that’s redundant).

I freely admit that I have a coffee problem. I have four coffee-making devices: a Nespresso machine in my office (the 5/7ths solution), a Ninja coffee bar at the house (for the weekends), a simple pour-over kettle for when I buy special beans, and a cold brew pitcher for when it's warm (>90 F) and I want to walk around feeling jittery and speaking before my brain has the opportunity to weigh in on the situation. If that weren't bad enough I have active memberships at 7 Brew, Dutch Bros, and even Starbucks (the only "coffee shop" in my small town).

37 post and no one has mentioned Cuban Coffee.... or should I say legalized crack.. OK... I'll mention it.. there done

When I was something like 8 I tried coffee, and it was terrible. Some old person (could have been 20) said "it's an acquired taste, you'll learn to like it when you get older". My reaction was to look at them like they were an idiot, and think to myself "why the f would I ever do that?". Haven't tried it since then. Life's too short for beverages you don't like.
