I know many of y'all will likely make the trek to Albuquerque here in the next 2 weeks to see the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, because its fun, and really, the only thing Albuquerque has that consistently draws people.

So - be careful coming in, not only for ballons, but for the oddly placed and worded TFR that comes out every year for the Fiesta. Its easy to miss if you don't know the city, just come from the south. It appears that the TFR is bigger this year than it has been in previous years as well, judging from the graphic at FAA.gov.

For those of you that know the city intimately, here's a pretty good description of the area from a local (being me):

The southern tip of the circle is at Montgomery/Carlisle, the eastern tip is pretty close to Tramway/Juan Tabo PG 2 Service Road, the northern tip is in Corralles, by Corrales Rd and Slightly North of the Cesar Chavez extension. And finally, the western tip is near Golf Course and Irving. That is a pretty big circle, guys, so really, keep your eyes open if you're coming in.

I think my brain could sooner comprehend FORTRAN than wade through that mess of numbers.

I used to be pretty good with FORTRAN. Old times...

yea now days you can actually type it out though spike, much easier than punching holes :D

I'll second Tony's comment. What's so hard about FORTRAN? I haven't programmed in it in YEARS, but I'll bet I still could.

That TFR, on the other hand...

LOL - that is one confusing as hell TFR, isn't it? Basically, the first group of numbers is explaining that the TFR is only active during Balloon Fiesta events, like the Mass Ascensions, the Glows, the Special Shapes Rodeos, the Big ol' Gas Balloon challenge, and whatnot. I usually figure its better just to avoid the park until October 14th. There's not much to see up there anyways. lol.

FORTRAN? Sissy stuff. Assembler? Yikes.

Assember. That's all C is. A high level representation of PDP-11 assembly language. I learned that stuff (PDP-11 assembly) once, too. A long time ago... A very long time ago...

Uh, Ghery, ANY high language is a high level representation of assembler, by definition. I guess assembler is a high level representation of machine code.

C is a lot closer to assembler what the hardware can do than say, BASIC is, though. That's prolly because it's one of the the oldest languages, next to COBOL. It was designed to be small and fast. It's not so small anymore.

This thread locked pending further review by the GEEKS. I can't go nowhere without hearing you turds talk about cccrap (scottish accent)

If you think FORTRAN's bad, try Javascript.

The TFR, for those of you who prefer it visually, can also be seen on my website:

Ah, but C follows the addressing methods of PDP-11 assembler. It follows a particular computer in its form. Don't know that you can make the same statement about FORTRAN.

when i was working with FORTRAN 20+ years ago, it was particularly suited to super-computing. Cray XMP had a great vectorizing compiler, which could take advantage of FORTRAN and create really fast simulations.

C, on the other hand sucked eggs because the language allows greater flexibility which means the compiler can't take advantage of optimizations as well. (Or, put another way, because FORTRAN was limited as a language, the compiler could do some pretty nifty things.)

Now, of course, the power of an XMP is available in your iPhone (although doesn't support FORTRAN, yet...)
