In the past, I have read/heard of people who, after flying for a while, simply 'hung it up'. Sometimes it was permanent and sometimes it was a temporary hiatus due to family/life/time/money. There was always a reason for doing so, but I always thought to myself "How can you do that!? Just MAKE the time to go fly and SAVE the money to pay for it! Find a way!"

Well, after not having flown since May, and having to get current at that time to be able to carry passengers (not to mention how far out of IR currency/proficiency I am), I had almost convinced myself to 'hang it up' for a while. With a 3 y/o and a 6 month old at home, and trying to grow the 'job' into a 'career', I just haven't had time to go out and punch holes in the sky. And if I did find time, there was always the guilt of spending money on flying by myself when I should be spending it on stuff for the wife and kids. I had decided that when the time for insurance renewal came around on the RV's, I would tell dad not to add me to the insurance for next year.

.....then I took my wife and kids to ATL this morning to put them on the aluminum cattle wagon for a trip to Iowa. First off, we had to check a bag which added $25 to the cost of the ticket PLUS what I paid extra to get "Economy Comfort" seats since that was the only area I could get two seats side-by-side when I bought the tickets. Then, when I asked for a Gate Pass so I could help my wife deal with the kids while sitting at the gate, I got lip from the ticket jockey saying (and I quote) "We don't just give out gate passes to help you out, you know." I didn't argue with him since he said he was going to give me one ANYWAY (he obviously felt like it was doing me a HUGE favor). Then we waited in the faux security line while trying to entertain a 3 y/o that was tired of sitting patiently. Then, while trying to get the stroller through the scanner, it wouldn't fit and the TSA agent was giving me grief over having to come do a 'hand check' on it (How dare I require to stop propping up on the wall and actually have to DO something). After that ordeal, we waded through the sea of people with a stroller trying not to bump people's heels or toes. I left them at the gate where my wife now has to deal with keeping them both entertained on the plane where she has to worry about them making too much noise... or changing a diaper... or having to feed the little one *GASP* IN PUBLIC *GASP*....

As I walked away from the gate after their plane left I immediately said to myself "Nope. I'm not hanging this flying stuff up. I'll find a way. I am not going to subject my family to this load of B.S. any more - they deserve better." Sure, it may be 4 hours of flying in the RV to get to Iowa instead of the 2 hr flight via Delta, but we are doing it together. And if she needs to pop it out and feed the kid - go for it.. And if he wants to scream, who cares? And if we want to pack 120 ounces of apple juice in case they get thirsty, we can do that.

I want my kids to be able to travel. I want them to see the diverse landscapes that our country has to offer, but I don't want to subject them to the cluster-f**k that commercial air travel has become. They deserve better.

So off I go to search for somewhere to do my BFR and maybe an IPC once I am current in the RV again. It's totally worth it...

Family travel is the best reason for GA. We just won't do commercial travel.

The catch does come down to figuring out how to keep current and proficient. It is a challenge (even for me), but important.

By the way, if y'all fly up here you can visit and we'll do an IPC. :)

My Story,

I just got current after 10 years of not flying.

Moving, Job, Baby and new house but not the lack of money kept me from flying. I fly purely for fun and do not fly myself for traveling.

Anyway 10 years ago It came time to renew my medical. I put it off and off until it was expired. At the same time I put off and off my BFR. Saying I will get it done.
10 years later I said enough dreaming of flying again I just said screw it I'm going to do it. So a visit to the School and 11 hours later I'm current again. I couldn't be happier.

I had to fly to a family funeral, recently and the damned TSA demanded I get in the nude-o-meter. When I refused, again, they pretended to be all offended, and took forever getting my obviously terrorist hide groped and patted.

When they finally ran out of ways to delay me, the azzhat said, "If you cooperated you would have been thru in seconds."

I said, :"If i cooperated, then we both would be drones for the marxist government.'

He didn't seem to like it.

Traveling anywhere is a great advertisement for private ownership.

Amen, brotha! Glad to hear it!

Totally. And it's worth it to spend the time and money to go up and at least do some proficiency flying once or twice a month so that you keep them safe and don't have to spend a big pile of money all at once to get current again to go on a trip.

Now, be sure that in a couple of years, you tell me what I'm telling you right now!

I just can't understand why so many women find the thought of privacy while breastfeeding to be offensive to their sensibilities, then go all stupid when men stare at their breasts.

That is about as hypocritical as it gets.

If women want to be "respected" they need to be consistent and respectable.

Yeah on our last commercial flight I told my wife no more commercial flights.... at least domestic. Of course now she wants one big trip to Austrailia before we start trying to have a kid *sigh*

I hate hate hate the cattle chute treatment you get. I'd much rather be a day late sitting in an FBO lounge waiting for weather to clear than deal with that crap. And don't get me started on the ridiculous faux security.

I don't think those two groups are the same women. The ones who "go all stupid when men stare at their breasts" are not likely to end up with children! ;)

Yep. I've never seen a breastfeeding mother care unless you're telling her to go elsewhere to nurse her baby.

It's something that nobody should care about.

Sorry to hijack your thread, Chris. :)

I want to stick a big dildo in my pants when I go into the nude o meter. :)

Went through my first one a few weeks ago. I get out and the guy says I have something in my pockets. "No I don't!" I think to myself as I check. I put my hand in my back pocket and pull out lint. Guy says 'that's it', pats my ass and sent me on my way.

that 2 hours flight in Delta is not a total of 2 hours. I bet you'd beat me doorstep to doorstep if I took commercial and you flew the RV.

Ain't that the truth!!!! Domestic flying in the United States is the tenth circle of hell!

I don't like flying on the airlines, when I have to I won't fly anyone other than Alaska or Virgin in the US.

TSA is a joke, just annoying window dressing. Tickets have become cheap enough that folks that can't afford to shower are now flying.

I avoid airlines best I can, and when I do fly on em' I like to get a few beers first.

Wife's total trip time from leaving the house this AM to her being at ground transportation in DSM was right around 5 hrs. We're close enough to ATL that I plan to leave the house just 2 hours before scheduled departure time, so that cuts some of the time off of the commercial route.

Estimated GA trip time from leaving the house to being at ground transportation in DSM would be right around 6.5 hrs (need to add long range tanks to the RV to get that extra hour of reserve fuel without having to stop enroute ;))

So roughly 1.5 hr faster via commercial. But geez what a pain... If I could do it without having to stop for fuel, I could be within half an hour of commercial door-to-door time.

EDIT: AND... Once I have to buy that third airline ticket, I can beat it cost-wise, too.

You'll never beat their dispatch ability. And therein lies the rub. If you REALLY have to get back by Monday GA isn't a good answer.

Obviously he was just looking for a pretext to pat your ass.

I've had a couple of negative commercial experiences (think Delta), but by and large I enjoy it. I get there early, grab a Starbucks and a pastry and watch people come and go. Occasionally chat up a stranger - people are always happy to tell you about their lives. Sometimes buy a magazine I'd never buy otherwise.

And I've never had anyone breastfeed around me, but they're more than welcome to!

Meh... I've had damn good luck with GA, probably approaching that of the airlines, when I have to be somewhere. You certainly need to be instrument rated, current, and proficient, and you need to have backup plans in place and/or leave early if you ABSOLUTELY have to be somewhere, but GA is a damn good method of travel if you do it right.

Same, winter aside, if I'm not flying the airliners most likely can't either. Plus any sort of weather creates massive delays that aren't noticed in GA. There was a night this summer where a friends flight from Denver diverted 20 miles from Omaha and went back to Denver because of a storm around omaha. With GA I would have just landed at another nearby airport.

If we ignore icing season, I can't remember a single instance of not being able to get where I wanted to go the same day I planned since I've had an instrument rating.

Bull****. My GA reliability is better than airlines.

Oh, the flight to Aus the boarding and security are only the tip of the iceberg. Unless you are flying Business or First Class, plan on being tortured. Fly V Aus or an Asian airline, do not go coach on any US flag carrier. Spend $30 and get a Oxy Codone, a Flexeril, and a Xanex for each of you, eat them as you get on the Transpac plane.

My only one was when the runway at Gaston's got so drenched and muddy we couldn't take off.

I've had to cancel flights for icing, but never one where I *had* to be somewhere - Only fun flights.

X2 and the ice season is much shorter here

That didn't stop Tony and me in the Aztruck. :D

Coolest takeoff I've ever seen! But it was actually after that, when it rained for several hours on Sunday afternoon after the majority of people had left and those of us who were there got stuck. One guy in a Bonanza tried to take off and had to abort. Muddiest airplane I've ever seen after that little stunt!

Ahh, right. I had gone back to Oklahoma on Saturday night. Got woken up at 5 AM by my friend (there are few things that I should be woken up at that hour for, and she was not waking me up for one of them) only to have her delay herself enough getting to the airport that we missed taking off before the storm. Rather, the engines were running as the storm was starting to hit, and I opted not to.

That storm later hit Gaston's. It was nasty, some very funky looking clouds.
