The way this is described, it sounds like he skidded the airplane. That's a good way to bend aluminum. Someone earlier mentioned a smoking hole. This is one of the ways to make such a thing.

Wow, that runway is WIDE. . . but is awfully short. . .

Almost did that once. If I had tapped the brakes, I would have been able to stop in the confines of the runway, but I decided to continue on down the taxi way for a few more feet. I put it down as a crosswind landing with a 90 degree crab.
