It would seem like a nice date for new citizens to know. Regardless how one might feel about taxes, most people need to file a tax return.

Founded partly to get away from unfair taxation without representation.

I'm willing to bet any money that "taxation"(fair or otherwise) is the reason in this equation and "without representation" is just an excuse. Vast majority of colonists would very likely happily continue to be subjects of the British Empire if English did not levy any taxes on them.
