How many of you are welding in your hangar?

My son was asking me the other day what the outlet is for in my hangar. He says it looks like it's made for a welder. He is pretty sure people use it for welding. In think perhaps not, but what are people running that requires 240vac in a small t-hangar? Welding? Industrial scale pot farm? Ai server farm?

Welder…

And three phase converter.

European iron for shrinking fabric.

I installed a 240vac outlet in my T hangar. Brought my TIG welder to the airport to mock up and tack a new exhaust system for the airplane, then brought the tubes back to the shop to back-purge and final weld. Saved me the hassle of removing the wings.

Air compressor is plugged into it now.

Maybe nuthin. But if ya gotta a 240 drop into the panel, why not put a 240 circuit in there? Ain’t no law says ya gotta use it. But if something comes up, it’s already there.

Ok hear me out. What about a soft serve ice cream machine. This has the potential of making my hangar the most popular one on the airport.

Could be a 30 amp 120 volt for an RV camper?
Stick a volt meter into it and find out if it is 120 or 240 volts.
Our rental Ts only have 40 amps 120 volts in each hangar. 1-20 for the lights and the second 20 amp breaker for the 3 receptacles. Not enough to run a 240 volt welder.

Sure, you disassembling and cleaning it daily?

If I need to weld in the hangar something has gone horribly wrong.

I do have 240, but that's cuz the hoist we have for the lift is 240v

Well I do remember a hangar fire that took out two airplanes due to someone welding.

They used to have one at 02C Capitol Drive in Brookfield WI.

I never was there when they fired it up, but I heard about it.

I have 220v in my hangar for my welders. Small projects only. No hesitation to use them but I prefer to grind outside.

Any welding I've done in my hangar is with a torch, no power required.
