Horrible youtube clip of the day.

I gotta say it was that song that kindled my interest in CB radio, that lead to ham radio, more electronics and then of course engineering. I owe my professional life to CW McCall and 'Convoy'.

That is so sad :(

What am I missing? Why is this sad and what is wrong with the video?

Aw c'mon Ed, Convoy's a classic.

The lingo has certainly changed, though. I've only seen maybe two cabover Petes in the last 10 years, I don't even know what a Jimmy is. "Good buddy" now has an entirely different meaning  and I've never heard anyone say "10 roger." I don't know what 10-9 means, only 10-4 and "what's your 20" are left from the 10-code days. I also don't know what a "swindle sheet" is, but I can guess based on context it means logbook.

I don't run in the area at all, so I don't know if anyone actually says "Flagtown" and I don't even know what "Shakeytown" is supposed to be. With city names, you're probably more likely to hear "S#!t-cago" these days. States can be a lot of things - Pennslyvania is pretty much always "PA" and sometimes states are referred to by their nicknames, like "the Badger," "the Hoosier," or "the Buckeye."

While Convoy has basically no musical merit whatsoever (Eminem sings more than CW McCall!), I kinda like it a bit because it is a throwback to the days before cell phones, when people had to depend on each other on the road and also to when truckers actually got some respect.

San Fransisco
Actually I think it's Los Angeles since I-one-oh doesn't go through San Francisco. :)

Hey I even liked "Convoy" when it came out. Made me want to hit the road and be a trucker... which I did kinda sorta.

GMC truck

But was it a GMC semi tractor, or just the piddly little SUV-like thing? I'm aware of the little one, but I'm pretty sure it's not big enough to be "haulin' hogs." ;)

San Fransisco

Ah, that makes sense.

Remember the TV show Movin' On? I think every kid wanted to grow and be a trucker after watching that one.

No. You're old. ;)

Keep in mind that the guy writing this was an ad executive and not a truck driver. He was expanding the persona he created for a bunch of commercials. Later he has I44 going through Chicago too. A little geographically challenged I would say.

Yeahbut, the musicians behind him (and the studio they used) were Chip Davis and what became Mannheim Steamroller, so he's forgiven for the gaffs.

They were ads for <something> Old Home bread and at the Mom's <something> Cafe and Truck Stop where CW MacCaw hung out.

Oh, and Jeez, Kent, 10-9 is "Say Again," Good Buddy. :D

I'm embarrassed to be thinking this, but Scott, you forgot the unofficial 10-69er. Anyone know where that comes from? (it's not that filthy)

Pisgah!

Geez, I can't remember to change my furnace filter, but I remember useless trivia from 35 year old TV ads...

Trapper John

Hmmm.... According to my 2008 national truck stop directory, there is no longer a truck stop in Pisgah, IA. :(
