Staying in a decent Courtyard with 'breakfast'. I pulled the lever on the Orange juice dispenser and out came some weak-azz, thin, transparent, amber slop. I shouted "Hey! Where is the orange JUICE!!" The girl looked at me with giant eyes and said "It's right there sir, you just have to pull the small handle down." "Oh no, no-no-nono-no. That is colored water, I would like orange JUICE like is says." "Thas awl we has sir." No pulp drinkers - prolly like butter-grease on yur pancakes too...

Aughta be a law, grumble, grumble, mumble, frick-a-frack-bejeezus. grrrrrrrrrr

Why are you wasting time with juice drinks at a Courtyard? Don't they have like vodka and crap like that?

If it's from concentrate, it's no good for you ....

The slop they pass off as food and HFCS drinks out there..

No wonder people are waddling around like a carnival freak show. :nonod:

Unless you go to a B&B or high(er) end hotel, that's what you get - a "concentrate" that's mixed with water.

The machines are never set to dispense the proper mix - almost always too much water (it's cheaper than the concentrate). You'd be as well off to pick up a can of frozen OJ.

I've yet to stay in a hotel of the class that Courtyard is in (that includes Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden, etc) or lower that has true OJ. Most of the remodeled Courtyards have a "bistro" where you can get the canned/bottled stuff which is far better.

I feel your pain...

Altho I get my money's worth from eating a lb of bacon, sausage and 5 waffles with 2 lbs of butter.....

MMMMMMMMM.. Yummy....

Agreed...I like my OJ like I like my peanut butter....crunchy!

If you like an orange drink watery product...try staying at a Holiday Inn Express! Goes well with their egg type products.

At least some places have real oranges...

Complaining about pulp-free OJ at a free motel breakfast? Really?

Shucks, that's not even a First World problem! :)

(BTW: We put 100% real orange juice in your delivered-to-your-room continental breakfast, if you select it. Apple juice is an option, too...

They're both from concentrate, however. lol)

Jay,

Sounds like you have a high class operation there. Some day maybe I can make my way there.

David

Yep, before Jay bought his first Hotel, he asked on rec.aviation for suggestions as to what people wanted in the place. I made mine (local newspaper with breakfast, I hate the USA Today) but pointed out that it was highly unlikely I'd ever get to Iowa City.

Turns out a few years later I had to trailer my Navion out to Nebraska so why not. Stayed there, got our juice and muffin basket. Came with a copy of the GANews/Flyer and a local paper. So the boy does listen.

I'm more likely to hit San Antonio (well New Braunfels) but we might make it down there some day.

I don't buy OJ that comes from concentrate, but I will admit to not liking a bunch of pulp in it, either.

They can strain the excess out and put it in the bottles for the pulp eaters.

A few pieces of pulp is okay, but when it presents a choking hazard or I feel the need to floss afterwards...that's too much f'ing pulp.

I'm a high-pulp person myself. Never understood people who preferred the pulp-free stuff. It's like buying creamy peanut butter or syrup that's not maple. What's the point?

+1....

Agreed...

Or cheese food like Velveeta....

I spend over half my life living out of various Marriott properties and I get so tired of the breakfast selections. If I am staying more than a few days, I usually hit a grocery store.

I always felt like pulp is a generational thing. My folks (and especially my grandparents when they were alive) always seemed to like pulp in their OJ, like they were getting more for their money.

IMHO, unless it's freshly squeezed, I don't want any pulp in my OJ. The pulp is typically added back in during the production process, so the pulp is likely coming from different oranges than the ones that produced the juice--ultimately displacing juice.

For all of you that like pulp, from me as a pulp-free juice drinker... you're welcome.

or syrup that's not maple

I will not eat that corn syrup crap that masquerades as maple syrup. I only buy real maple syrup. I also ask for "real" maple syrup when I go to a restaurant that serves breakfast. Most times they say they don't have it, but once in a while I get lucky and they have it, but don't give it out unless asked for, or it costs a little more...doesn't matter, I'll pay it.

I buy it... Nothing like the real stuff either.....:)..

And.. It cost ALOT more then the fake stuff...:yikes:

you guys . . . just go outside to the tree and pull down some oranges and juice it yourself . . .

The only trees I have close to me are a couple of black cherry trees in the backyard. They're beautiful when they're in bloom (tapering off right now in fact) but when those cherries ripen and splat on the concrete patio, it's a mess.

As far as oranges, there used to be a lot of orange groves in San Jose years ago. There's a small down the street from where I work, but I've never gone down there and picked them. There's no fence around the trees, and the sidewalk goes right past it, so I'm sure people walking by pick some.

In fact, I don't think I've ever had an orange fresh off the tree, just the ones they sell in grocery stores. I'm gonna have to try one.

True. A small bottle is about $14 to $16 I think. But it's worth it.

It's all zombie juice anyway. But I get your drift. Seems fresh squeezed is the only way to go.

Well, that's disappointing. I usually only get Tropicana or Florida's Natural, with lots of pulp.

The best freshed squeezed OJ I've ever had was at the Blue Dophin Cafe in St. Armand's Circle in Sarasota.

No OJ here. Gives me wicked heartburn that won't quit every time I try. Love the pulpy stuff. Just can't hack it.

I haven't been to that cafe, but I really like that area. I recommend the Columbia Restaurant if you ever get back there. Be sure to try the 1905 salad. Or, better, yet, come to Tampa and hit the original location in Ybor City, Florida's oldest continuously operated restaurant. You can watch the Spanish Flamenco show during dinner. My treat if you're ever in the area. :)

Ah, the Columbia! Yes, I've been there many times. There was an old man who worked there that my daughter called the "Bird man" because he would come up behind her whistling like a bird.

The 1905 is awesome. My wife has their cookbook and makes a perfect reproduction of that salad.

I'll take you up on that if I'm ever in Tampa. I've always wanted to go to the original Columbia.

Yep. My girlfriend made the repro of that salad for one office event, and she was summarily forbidden from bringing anything but that salad to all future events. Small world. :)
