Hey guys, I am new to this forum and I need some help/advice. I did do a search on this forum and on google before asking on here but I haven't really found anything to assist me. I recently applied for a second class medical certification for the first time and got the letter back from the FAA requesting additional information from my doctors on a couple conditions I have a history of, and a medication that I haven't taken for almost a year. My only problem is that I separated from active duty military in late December, so I currently am uninsured (insurance should hopefully be coming soon), and also don't have any current treating physicians for these conditions. I did try and call the Naval Medical Center for one of those things and they were not able to help me as I cannot be seen by them anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do for this to be able to get cleared? I am currently about halfway into that 60 days required by the FAA and I know I can request an extension from the FAA, but I am trying to get into school and need that certificate to do so. I had also already begun flight training for my Private Pilot License so I am kind of at a standstill at this point because of this. Any help or suggestions/advice would be very greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Dan

http://www.aeromedicaldoc.com/ can help you with understanding the FAA process, but I'm surprised you have to see a doctor to get your records. That should be an easy fax.

Don't you know any doctors through family or friends that call and request the records for you? Worst case pay cash for a visit and get them that way.

You may need to get your congresscritter involved to deal with the Navy to get your records. Dr Chien can help with the FAA but not sure about any DoD issues.

I have my entire medical records, the issue is that they want written letter from my current treating physicians regarding my current prognosis and further treatments.

It sounds like maybe OP is saying the FAA is requesting an explanation letter or something from the doc, not just records.

Yes, that is my issue. I no longer have access to see the doctors I was seeing while I was active duty.

Please clarify.... The school you want to get your private pilot license with requires a Class 2 medical to just be admitted to the program??

If that isn’t correct, please update the data

If that statement is correct, that school may need reevaluating. You don’t need a class 2 or higher until you are going to fly for compensation. A Class 3 or BasicMed suffices for just about every bit of civilian flight training.

write them and ask for an extension. A good private fam doc should be able to see you, update your conditions and write a letter for you. i you may ... what conditions and what old medicine. Understandably, you may not wish to share such.

I need a class 2 because I will be pursuing a degree from liberty university to eventually go for my commercial and atp. They require a class 2 to start classes.

I don't mind sharing. I used to take Zyrtec because of allergies, but I switched over to Claritin last year because I knew the FAA doesn't like Zyrtec. Unfortunately on one of the documents I had sent in for a different condition, Zyrtec was listed as a medication I had been taken. The second issue was part of my sleep study for my OSA. When I did my initial sleep study they asked if I was having trouble focusing and remembering things when I was extremely tired. I checked the yes block and on the sleep study this turned into "has history of memory loss" so the FAA wants a full history and treatment of memory loss. Then the last one was awhile back I was having intermittent shortness of breath, I was determined to not have asthma, however when I did the methacholine challenge test I was close enough that they gave me an advair inhaler since I was experiencing some shortness of breath. My primary care provider at the time thought it could have been caused by reflux and when I began treatment for that, they shortness of breath stopped and I haven't had to use the inhaler at all. The FAA is requesting a current status from my treating physician on that also, but I haven't seen a pulmonologist in over a year and a half because the symptoms stopped.

As said in posts 2 and 3, reach out to Dr. Bruce Chien. If you are humble and honest with him, he can provide the guidance to undo that knot. He is also former Navy, flying P-3 Orions.

I enlisted in the reserves. I am waiting on all the paperwork to get pushed through, it has been slow because of the holidays and I was told it may be until February before I can get insurance. As far as the VA goes, that process takes quite some time as well.

I repeat...get your Congresscritter involved. Find the VA and/or military staffer in the local, office and they can cut thru the red tape and backlog incredibly fast.

Looks like you might have to just dig in your own pockets and pay to see a private doctor if you need this done quickly because of the school schedule. Or delay school another semester.

BasicMed requires having held at least a third class medical certificate that was valid at some point since July of 2006. For most private pilot trainees, the only way they would meet that requirement would be to apply for a third or higher class of medical certificate prior to soloing, which would make the BasicMed signoff unnecessary.

Don’t be so Nit picking... I know Daniel can’t have BasicMed because he is new to system.

I was trying to pint out that his flight school of choice was a bit out of bounds by requiring Class 2 at the very beginning when a 3rd works as far as FAA is concerned.

Let me add to the fantastic advice already received.

Do not send the FAA anything you do not KNOW will suffice and answer the questions they are asking. In order to "know that you know", you'll need an AME that "knows".

    Dr. Chien is that guy.

If he is using the GI Bill to pay for training then the VA requires him to have a valid class 2. Since he is doing a university program and using the GI Bill to pay for it I’m sure that the school is just making sure that he will be eligible for those benefits.

Sometimes the FAA isn’t the only agency involved that has requirements that must be met.
