Hi everybody! A good friend of ours in Dayton, OH, needs to find a new home for their Golden Retriever "Rose". Rose is a wonderful, friendly dog just like you'd expect as a Golden Retriever. We would be glad to take Rose for them and give her a good home, however being in Oklahoma City is a bit of a long drive or flight for one leg.

So we're looking for help - if anybody is heading that way it would be greatly appreciated.

We've fostered many dogs and flown several PnP flights ourselves, so we're hoping we can make this one work out too.

Total distance is about 705 nm, it can be split up any way necessary. Obviously I'll take the last leg.
Closest airport in Ohio is I19, Greene County, but any of the Dayton metro area airports would be fine.
From there, maybe to somewhere in Illinois, then a leg to Missouri, then I could pick her up for the flight to Oklahoma City.

Thanks!
Russ

Wouldn't it be easier to properly train the dog?

Or simply take it out on a leash? Plenty of folks in my neighborhood do that.

All that said good luck finding a pilot and an aircraft.

I know there is an answer to this, I just don't know what it is.

Why not give the dog up locally for an adoption, vs. flying it to the other side of the country?

Some people view it as a good excuse...reason...to fly, but no good-hearted deed goes unquestioned around here it seems.

Russ,

I know there's probably no way in hell this will work but...

Dr. Robb and I are doing a transport from Muskogee (MKO) to St. Louis (1H0) on Saturday, actually, Dr. Robb is based at Sands Springs, OK (KOWP) and I'm based at Fredericktown, MO (H88). I'm sure we could take this dog the opposite direction and cover the SE MO (H88) to NE OK (KOWP) section of the trip. BUT, I'm leaving early Saturday, wheels up by 0800 CDT (13z), so the dog would have to be to me by tomorrow evening, I'd be glad to overnight it. I know that's pushing it. The best place for me to pick it up would be Cape Girardeau, MO (KCGI)

I'll post this response over on P-n-P also.

Not commenting on the merit of the flight, but...

I have "heard" that you can put a single wire electric fence near the top of the fence and the dog will learn not to climb the fence with in 2 days.

Thanks for the offer of help Tim!

Sure, there are lots of options for solving the problem, and possibly other options for adopting her out locally if necessary, and they are looking at others as well. Naturally there are more details that aren't in my post, that's just the most recent thing - they're also moving soon (military). Us adopting her is just one option. When we used to live in Ohio, we let them know that if they ever needed to find a new home for Rose, we'd be happy to take her. Of course, everything was fine until after we left! :) With that in mind, they asked us first if we'd be willing to take her, assuming of course that some kind of transport could be worked out.

So I figured I'd throw the flight transport idea out there. For people who aren't aware, there are ton of volunteer pet transport flights that go on all the time. Many, like Tim mentions, use it as a good reason to go flying instead of just burning holes in the sky...

Not trying to be critical Russ, but just a suggestion; it might be better to simply post that you have a dog that needs transport without all of the details. Then you wouldn't open the door to suggestions not specifically related to the request.

That long??? Our German Shepard learned after one zap not to climb the fence. We didn't even have to turn it on anymore. :D

My in-laws put in an electric fence. After one shock, their German Short Haired Pointer wouldn't venture more than a foot from the house. And then only if it had to go out to pee or poop. It would sheepishly go out the door and hug the outside walls, do it's business and hustle back inside. It was kind of funny, but really pathetic.

Wish I could help, but I don't have any near term plans to take my C172 out of Florida (except one flight to LZU in Ga soon).

You are, of course, correct, and I've edited my OP as such. ;)

Disregard, this flight is no longer needed. Thanks!

OK, we've been sucked it to the story. What happened? Find a closer adopter? The owners are keeping her?...
