Helmet and flight suit

I was #2 for take off at CRQ. cal highway patrol was in front in a tail dragger Cessna. Pulled up the hold short line and I could see a helmet. Keyed the mike and said, "Nice helmet". He flipped me off.

I see the Red Bull guys all running them. I'm sure they are required for them. But You auger that thing, I'm not sure a brain bucket is gonna do much for you. But just like those painted headset, it's just so uber cool, right? It fits the bill and says, "Hey bud. Smoke on!"

Did it have a visor on it so he wouldn't be able to lick the windows?

I'm required to wear both for work but don't in personal flying because it's not worth the hassle.

I have no problem with those that wear them in personal flying for protection though. I've seen pictures of pilots that had scars from flash burns where there's a distinct line between Nomex coverage and bare skin. I also had a student in my class who was in an accident that threw his head into the windscreen. There were helmet scrap marks on the windscreen but no injuries to himself. The stuff can prevent injuries. Whether or not it's worth it to the individual is up to them.

Well, REAL pilots in WWI did not use seat-belts either :D

When (if?) I get my skybolt built I plan on wearing a helmet for acro. Hard canopy and head can mean a knockout if something goes wrong. Also if I have to depart the ac I don't want to be knocked out before I can pull the chute. If people think thats lame fine.
But for just flying from point a to b probably not using it. I wouldn't make fun of someone wearing it, unless they fly the OH break in an rv as a flight of 1.:D

I fly with a David Clark Helmet when mountain flying in rental aircraft. (No 4-5pt harnesses)

Cessna did a study that shows 95.7% of fatal GA accidents would have been survivable without head trauma.

I saw an NTSB statistic that 95% of fatal GA accidents would have been survivable with a helmet.

Do not forget that statistical data shows that usage of a helmet increases head injuries by 1200% or more.
(if you don't know this awesome sad old real-life joke, look it up, it is priceless)

I have contemplated wearing one while out in the car. What would the cops do at a speed trap if you cruised by with a helmet, hans, and 5 point harness on. (My motorcycle helmet has a mirrored visor. Pulling up to a drive thru should be interesting, especially if it is a bank!)

More than likely, the CHP is required to wear that.

It was a real jerk move to make fun of him for it.

The important question is that in the eyes of the babes, is just the fact that you are a pilot enough to overcome helmet hair?

I'd like to see a source on that. I haven't seen anything along those lines.

I didnt dig deeper to find the original source of data, but I read it here:

A close friend that was with the FAA helped me research flight helmets stats years ago. He had personally investigated the crash site of 26 fatal Alaska cub crashes, most of the pilots that had died would have survived if they were wearing a helmet. His opinion after seeing the autopsy's is all but 4 of the 26 dead pilots would have lived if they had worn a flight helmet. The autopsy of many of the dead pilots showed the only major trauma was to the head. Usually the front left quadrant of the scull was crushed. It seems that all to often even with a shoulder harness your head hits the left side of the plane with enough force to just barley kill you.

Cessna has research that shows “survival rate in an aircraft crash is 95.7% if you eliminate the head trauma”

I've done short-distance street tests wearing a full-face helmet in a race car and was glad not to get stopped since the car's not street-legal. An autocrosser friend got pulled over for wearing a helmet.

To hear him tell it, the officer let him go after ascertaining he was 'just a dork and not a menace.' With a verbal warning and ridicule.

I think the theory is the helmet limits visibility and awareness (hearing).

In some parts of CA telling a guy he has a nice helmet is a compliment.

The guys who are flying Super Cubs in Alaska are doing the highest risk flying that you will find outside of a war zone. If anyone needs a helmet, it's them. I don't think I know anyone who has done off-airport stuff with regularity who hasn't totaled an airplane or two.

I know of a couple folks who would still be alive if they had worn a helmet.

You really did get screwed out of the "sense of humor gene" when you were conceived...didn't you...

I wear a nomex flight suit for work, would never catch me in it in my own plane though.

I wear a helmet when I fly a Cub. The majority of the guys I know do. I don't usually wear my Gallet in the Cessna but I should.
