Hi All, San Diego area pilot here, been reading POA for a while and finally joined the community. Got licensed back in the Northeast (KASH) and am now flying through Plus One, attached are two pics from recent trips up and down La Jolla coast and out to Borrego Valley and Aqua Caliente

POA seems like a great knowledge-base and I've learned a lot of tips and tricks here the last few months, as well as gotten many laughs

Cheers

Welcome! What's your opinion on Plus One? They seem to have a huge fleet, way bigger than your average FBO.

So far I've had a great experience. Most of the other outfits I've rented from were geared primarily as flight schools so scheduling was a challenge and it was not really possible to use the plane to do a weekend trip or do any kind of real traveling as a pilot, so in that regard Plus One is great, you kind of get the feeling like you're a part owner of the plane. But it does depend on the plane and the location... some of the aircraft are in great shape and are a real pleasure to fly (such as the 172N I'm using now, 180hp conversion with GTN650, JPI, etc.), others are a little rough around the edges and beat up... I find the rates very reasonable, at least compared to the last two clubs I rented from

Plus One is one of the best things in General Aviation.

I haven't lived in San Diego for 5 years, but I'm still a member.

Gillespie Field is great...I've flown there a few times for lunch, and did my RV transition training with a guy named Reuven Silberman on the field there. It's nice to get lots of straight-in approaches, and lots of good VFR reporting points ...Lake Jennings, Loveland Reservoir, city of Crest.

Great pics! Been meaning to get out to Borrego. There's the desert "Super Bloom" going on right now in Anza-Borrego that would be cool to see from the air.

Yeah. I'm gonna go have a look tomorrow.

Welcome to the joint. Looks like you've been flyin the Pirate. 91E is another nice plane there. Just be sure and tell everyone here you covered up the AOA if you fly it.

I flew out there this past weekend to check it out, got 1.7 on the Hobbs flying up and down the valleys just west of the desert. I can't say I was super impressed, but maybe that's because the media oversold it... it was mostly just patches of light green wisps on the desert floor, with an occasional yellow splotch. I was at 7,500 so maybe I was too high but the mountains there tend to give me the willies so I like to stay high. I'm sure if I was at a lower AGL or even hiking I would have seen more. I did see some nice waterfalls though just west of lake Cuyamaca, I believe it was Three Sisters falls... that was pretty cool

Just be sure and tell everyone here you covered up the AOA if you fly it.
That's right. The 172 lacks a red handle and BRS but I hear there is a guy out in Hawaii that will at least sell me a nice AOA

Yeah, probably one of those things better taken in at ground level.

I like Gillespie Field. That's where I fly in to when I go to San Diego.

I flew out of Montgomery before but I prefer Gillespie, they split the frequencies for the north and south runways though when they get busy which can catch newcomers off guard

yep.
if there was plus one type club in most major markets, flying would be so much cheaper there. I was flew with them in mid-late nineties. great operation.

They recently also started doing more social events here, happy hour at local eateries, etc..

I don't see anything about those on the website and don't recall seeing it on the bulletin boards at either Montgomery or Gillespie.

Yeah it was a little hidden, I found it by accident when checking the squawk box at SEE, there was a flyer printed out. Apparently folks said Montgomery Gibbs had a bunch of flyers printed out. There's a Facebook group as well for Plus One that has about 50 members that seems modestly active where they post the stuff, but no it's not on the main website or somewhere necessarily easy to find (which I did mention to the organizer last time)
