Helicopter parenting

Technically cool, parentally horrible. Sad even. Walk with your kid, he'll appreciate it. This parenting style won't end well.

I see no problem. Dads a geek. The quad copter isn't a substitute dad, it's a proof of concept. He wondered if he could do it so he set about and did it.

Good for him! How many unfinished plans do the rest of us have lying around? I think that kid has an awesome dad. I'd bet a paycheck of mine to a pack of Oreos of yours that that parenting style ends just fine.

Yer on. Of course you'll have to put up a pack of Oreos in addition to your paycheck so that it is a square deal... (are the catfish flying?)

Ahhh, you saw my trick!

Okay, a pack of Oreos each..

In all seriousness, reading the story I didn't sense a lazy dad. Quite the opposite and if true that kid is gonna do just fine.

So at what point does an R/C toy with sensors (smartphone cam), GPS, and software become a UAV?

When you get paid. Apparently, at that point you need your commercial rating and a class 2 medical.

I suspect the walk to the bus would be far healthier for the dad than sitting watching the video feed.

Probably just a guy who likes to tinker playing.

I'd say though that if you live somewhere where you really don't feel safe letting your kid walk 400 meters in daylight to a school bus stop its time to move!

Also, another thought... what kind of payload can these things carry? I'm amazed no terrorist/domestic nut job hasn't though of strapping explosives or some kind of firearm to one of these things. Then again, I'm surprised the terrorists are still fixated on airliners considering what a few suicide bombers could accomplish on Black Friday.

No, the ultimate helicopter parenting is the guy who attempted to pick his kid up at school in the helicopter.

Security cameras are a sick joke. All it does is makes a video of the robbery/mugging/murder/whatever so the parent can have a video of their kid being abducted or murdered for posterity. It might help catch the murderer, maybe, however it won't solve the primary problem.
