I've decided that I will escape a portion of Alaska's winter this December by retreating to Hawaii. I'm wanting to fly as much as possible... I have on my list: Gliders, paragliding, skydiving, rentals... etc. I'm a licensed glider/ powered pilot with the goal of crossing off another bucket list item.

Anyone have suggestions, connections, or good contacts to put me in touch with?

If you're going to Oahu, check out the action at Dillingham Field. Lots of options there.

Which island? On Maui, there's Maui Aviators. On the big island, TropicBird at KOA. I've flown with both and you will be happy with either. Suggestion - just take the CFI along. They make great tour guides and can pronounce the reporting points on the radio. Have fun. And don't let sticker shock ruin the experience. :D

Sorry that I can't recall name of small airport but it's down from the North Shore. Several years ago I took a Stearman ride up and down the coast. Beautiful scenery

Just an idea

Moore Air. Mark Jones. Ex USAF pilot. Based at HNL. (808) 833-5628

:mad2: Don't remind me! We went on a family vacation to Hawaii a few years ago and parked at Dillingham to go hiking. I didn't have my pilot's license then but that's probably one of those moments that sticks in the back of your mind and finally prods you to learn how fly.

Next time! :D

Sounds like Dillingham. Definitely worth checking out - gliders and sky diving are big up there.

If you are looking for a plane to rent for island hopping, I highly recommend Moore Air at HNL (already mentioned). Good outfit and a decent fleet of planes.

If you are just being a tourist take a tandem skydive get video post on fb. If you are learning new tricks I'd go with paragliding on HI. Gear and instruction run about the same but tons of free airtime paragliding in HI. Not sure how easy it is to learn over there, heard something about a lack of beginner sites. Get basic license at Point of the Mountain or Socal first.

+1.

On Oahu, Pacific Warbirds. Former Coast Guard aviator w/ an SNJ.

Bruce flies out of the former Barbers Point CGAS and offers a flight retracing the path of the attack on Pearl. Has a whole program recreating the event, very cool.

How bad are the prices for a rental with CFI?

I'm pretty sure that 15 years ago, my last trip to HI I rented from Maui Aviators. I opted for the check ride, and solo rental of a 150 cause I wanted to take my wife, and not have anyone with us. We flew down past the Hana road, to the waterfall, over to the big island and near the volcanos. One of them was spitting at the time so we couldn't get too close. It was a lot of fun.

Two cautions, you will almost certainly fly through a rain shower or two while you are there so be prepared for that, and the tour helicopters are a pain in the rear. Outside of the Maui class C, it's every man for himself. The tour helicopters do NOT own the airspace around the tourist sights.

This is all great! Thanks. Looking at flying into Honolulu. Not sure If we'll island hop or just kick it in Oahu. I've heard the Civil Air Patrol flys gliders there... It helps that I'm a member I guess!

I was in Maui in June for my honeymoon. With CFI it was $268/hr I believe.

Whats the weather in December like? Someone mentioned its Hawaii's rainny season!
