We need to fly to Asheville on Thursday, but weather has been a little squirrelly lately, so we are taking our alternate selection more seriously than usual.
Can anyone recommend either KGMU or KGYH? Will need a rental car and we like alternates with decent maintenance facilities.

Oh sure you say. "It's nowhere near Asheville." And you are correct. But you haven't lived until you've enjoyed the Friday fish boil at the Viking.

Based at GYH. Great airport: big runways and cordial controllers. It’s in an industrial area so not a lot amenities nearby.
GMU is the busiest GA airport in the state. Very convenient to downtown, shops, restaurants, etc.
venture capital just bought 1 of the FBOs at GMU & both FBOs at GYH so not sure about fees.

I used to fly into GYH so much that I left a car there. :D

Great airport. The FBO folks were really nice (I used the one at the NE end).

How did all those pilots and passengers fit in the Lions Club van???
Detroit Harbor, the densest settlement is a mile and a quarter / half south of 2P2. Hotels, the Viking, and other public houses are along the route.

Yup, drove that POS van down for a walleye lunch. Great little airfield and beautiful flight from C29. This year we flew in to SUE for lunch at Waterfront Mary's. In all fairness, I was warned when I called the manager for the combination to the lock box for the LC van. It is rolling junk...but it's the best junk available. :cheerswine:

(SUE) The Door County Maritime Museum by the bridge is pretty neat. And the Gnoshery downtown has decent lunch-brunch fare. Pat MacDonald ('My future's so bright I have to wear shades') is from Sturgeon Bay and runs the Steel Bridge Songfest the second Saturday of June every year.

(3D2) Ephraim-Gibraltar (on the Door Peninsula) is another "hidden gem". Ephraim (Wilson's Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor) is a mile NE and Fish Creek (the site of Al Capone's whisky smuggling caves) is two miles SW (after walking NW past the threshold of 14). Alexander's and The English Inn are on the left about 1-3/4 miles from the field . . . why do a $100 hamburger when you can do a primo $200 prime-rib dinner.

KGMU is fine, I usually go to KGSP. Good FBO, parking was $10/night and waived one night with 10gal of fuel. Check the bill though, they charged me $10 x 7 x 7 for 8 nights before. I called and they gave me a full refund so I’m still a fan. Lots of good free snacks and good ice cream snacks behind the counter, yummmm.

We flew into Asheville today. LIFR until we got close. then it Al cleared up
