How are the hard landing inspections triggered? Are there accelerometers, does the plane record VSI when the mains touch? Self reported by crew?

Curious as I recently rode PX and they absolutely planted it.

Some airplanes will show the instantaneous load factor at touchdown to the crew in a post flight report provided by the onboard maintenance computer. The MD-11 where I work is that way. Many airliners are capable of that sort of report but there are human factors reasons why it not be the best idea to have the pilots fixate on that type of data. Look up Emirates 521.

Usually the crew just writes up “suspected hard landing” in the maintenance log and the mechanics look at the data to determine the corrective action, if any, prior to the next departure. Otherwise it gets caught by the data download, which like Larry said, is surprisingly often still done using physical floppy disk style technology every 2-6 legs or so.

Hehe, the old A330 would spontaneously spit out quite a lengthy printout for “hard landings”. Sort of start of the art, I considered it an endorsement of a proper landing!
