Yesterday was the first day of Hanukkah. I think.

Happy holidays to all POAers that celebrate the Jewish traditions and customs.

Can someone explain the story behind the tradition? Seriously, I find it fascinating.

Happy Hanukkah to all the Jewish POA members. Can't help you with the explanation .

Everything I know about Hanukkah I learned from Adam Sandler.

It's a military holiday celebrating a successful revolt against the Greeks.

Not a major holiday, except for Americans with Christmas envy.

As a school kid I saw my Jewish buddies get Hanukkah off right before we got off for Christmas. I wanted to be Jewish!

And that's pretty much it. Altho I would refer to North Americans, 'cuz Canada is included. First time in recorded history that a group of people went to war to protect religious freedom. Big deal in NA due to immigration from Eastern Europe in the late 1800s and early 1900s. First time Jewish kids went to public schools and came home askin why they didn't have a big celebration around the winter solstice.

I think you're thinking of Kwanza.
Actually, he's right. Hanukkah is a fairly minor, non-Biblical holiday that has become more major in large part because it comes around the same time as Christmas.

And he's right that it is a military holiday, celebrating a victory in the Maccabean revolt against the Greeks, namely the recapture and re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem. The word Hanukkah means "dedication" in Hebrew. As the tradition goes, as part of the rededication, they lit the Temple candelabra (Menorah) using enough oil to last a day. It continued to burn for eight.

Decent short description of the holiday and the history here.

The menorah was the first LOP operation recorded by a religion! ;)

Happy efficient fuel usage week, Jewish friends. :)
