Gut bacteria were taken from either skinny or obese twins and transplanted into gnotobiotic mice (mice without any resident microbes). The bacteria from the fat twins made the mice fat and visa versa, concomitant with interesting metabolic changes in the bugs themselves. The paper and a news story.

Great research and article. I saw it.

The implications are that if we change our gut flora with macrobiotics we can better control obesity.

There are contributing factors to obesity such as lack of exercise and over eating but they are finding more and more that some people can gain weight eating half the calories of other people irrespective of activity.

If the gut flora (thousands of living bacteria) can change our metabolism than they likely can directly cause and effect with heart disease, diabetes, cancer, MS, MD and other chronic illnesses.

Another article talks about tooth decay stopping when you stop eating refined grains, such as breads and other white starchy carbohydrates like potatoes or popcorn (sugar and near sugars). We have known for some years that cancer is promoted with high sugar diets.

Other research indicates flora changes due to over use of antibiotics and eating foods high in sugars as well as low consumption of fermentation foods like olives, pickles, yogurt......

This whole line of research supports old world medical treatments of holistic treatments rather than chemicals and modern drugs.

The body heals itself if it is properly fueled with nutritious produce without chemical pollution.

For those interested, look up "Clean Gut" books and topics from Dr. Junger. His experience led him to learn more about this topic and develop a 21-day gut cleansing diet program to rebalance the flora and get your body healing itself.

I need to loose some weight. Where can I find a skinny girl with Gut bacteria to rub with her? Can you imagine the business potential for this. Forget about the gym just come and rub with me (only girls).;)

Why are we that concerned over the health of lab mice?
We're not. We are interested in how the lessons learned can help humans. The next richest man in the world could be the guy that figures out how to make fat people skinny without us having to torture ourselves day in and day out.

They should sell it at Wally World.:D

I'm not sure this research really means much. Do the mice have access to 24x7 junk food and pizza? Are they watching TV for hours at a time along with endless snack commercials. Are mice tempted with pizza and beer. Can they get a can of soda when they want?

That is exactly why the experiment is important. You have to be able measure cause and effect. If two mice get the same exercise and eat the same food and one loses weight and the other doesn't then it is easier to determine the differences and find what caused the weight loss or gain.

A similar test in humans would be harder because people lie. (I only had a half a cup of ice cream. But their "cup" is a 32 ounce big gulp.

Probably end up being junk food helps fatty bacteria and healthy food promotes skinny germs. So it will comeback to not eating garbage. No magic pill for fatty pants.

Kim Jong il. He's figured it out. (Actually it's a family thing, dad had the concept)
