Our Governor, Chris Christie, gave a speech at my college. As he was leaving he acknowledged me, and shook my hand! That was so cool.

That is him shaking my hand. :)

I thought I felt a disturbance in The Force. Or maybe those were just impact tremors.

Definitely not a guy I'd care to shake hands with, no offense. There are very few politicians I'd even give the time of day, much less want to shake hands with.

Got a handshake from Sen. Strom Thurmond out of the blue, once. I was registering for college classes at the time. It was quite surreal as I recall.

He's just another bloated politcian that gets diarrhea, just like everyone else. Didn't he endorse Donny Drumpf for the Presidential nominee? I hope you've had your vaccinations. You should probably start on penicillin ASAP.

I got flipped off by Walter Chronkite just before he passed...(in a joking manner)

I have gotten to work with Christie a few times over the years...he is a super nice guy in person even when he is not having to be "on" and I was rootin for him this election cycle.

Cool experience Princess. Its good to know you can appreciate an experience without having to wear your political ideology on your sleeve. Too bad others can't.

A respectful request to include in these thread titles a tiny hint of their content.
"NA" (non-aviation) has also been used in the past by some to help others know more about the post in advance of clicking it.
    Thanks

What a refreshing change to see someone EXCITED by a visiting politician. Too many people are jaded when it comes to politics. (See most responses above about washing your hands, seismograph readings, etc.)

In my 35-year airline career, I had the opportunity to meet many politicians and celebrities. One example is when G.W. Bush chartered our MD-80 to Iowa to announce that he was going to be the next President. I can tell you that he drank O'Doul's. Being in Iowa at the time, I also got to meet several other candidates including Liddy Dole. I also had the honor of my airline being hired to dump the lavatories of AF2. Let no one tell you that their S$%t don't stink. And I got the tour of AF1.

I also met Cokie Roberts and drove her in my car, and several other high-profile press folks. I have a nice ABC ballcap that is better than my AOPA one.

One thing I learned from all this is that they are all just folks. They put their pants on the same as me. They are just people. They are far from perfect, just like all the rest of us. Some of them are nice to us folks in the trenches, others not so much.

I met Bill Richardson, when he was running for the democrat nomination for president, in the bathroom at Cutter Aviation in Albuquerque. Actually, as he opened the door, the door hit my foot. His body guard reached in and put his hand on my butt and pushed me away.

I sure it was more exciting for him than it was for me.

I once picked up an unidentified VIP at an undisclosed location in a country the US has no official aviation treaties or status of forces agreements with. That unidentified VIP I later recognized to be then Senator John Tower. He seemed to be an easy going guy.

At the time, I couldn't get over the fact that we went to so much effort to go get this guy. It required the installation of a VHF AM radio, which had to be flown out to us (all UHF comms at that time), special planning and coordination with the task force, the battle group, and the State Department.

Meh. I have nothing in particular against Christie. I've never met the man, actually. But I will admit that I'm jaded. I've met more than my share of politicians, and most of them I wouldn't trust not to steal the silverware if I allowed them into my home. And it's not even good silverware.

The local ones have generally been okay. They usually seemed to be in the game for the right reasons. Most of the higher-up ones, however, made my skin crawl.

Closest I came is the day I tricked Charlie Wilson (as in Charlie Wilson's War) to let me into his office. Most of the other famous people I've met have been long after they've slipped into retirement.

I did take a swing at Marion Blakey when she was the FAA Administrator. We've joked about it subsequently.

My father has a great story about when Richard Nixon was running for president, he visited Helena for some campaign action. My father and his friend decided they would go check it out, they followed him and his limo around all day in my fathers willys jeep. After about four hours the limo pulled over, Nixon got out and walked over to them still sitting in the jeep. He shook their Hands and then pulled out a couple little campaign pictures of himself, autographed them and then went about his day. My father still followed him the rest of the day. When I asked him why he did that, his answer was that they just wanted to see what all the fuss was about, he had seen him on tv but just wanted to check him out.

I introduced my son to Roger Staubach at one of my Naval Academy reunions. When we walked away he asked if he should have gotten his autograph. I said of course not, someday you'll be more famous than he is and he'll be wanting your autograph. Now my son is the head of some secret government cyber unit and he is very close hold with whom he speaks. I guess famous is the last thing he wants.
