Great video from AVweb on Why gear up landings happen

So, without watching the video, I'm going with "distraction". Something happens which disrupts the flow/performance of normal pre-landing checklist completion, and the gear gets missed. Maybe it's a non-standard ATC request, maybe it's fiddling with an iPad/tablet; whatever it was, it came at a time that you would normally be doing the GUMPS check. How close did I come?

I finally got around to watching the video and there are a couple of stats that surprised me and one that didn't.

Roughly half of the gear ups were mechanical failures/collapses and other half mental. I was expecting more brain farts and fewer glitches.

That the 210 was at the top of the list for gear ups does not surprise me. However, Mooney being in the #2 spot did. With the early Mooneys being on a Johnson Bar and the later ones essentially replacing the Johnson Bar with an electric motor, I would have expected it to do a lot better. And I've found that it's hard for me to not notice the inability to slow down when the gear is tucked in a Mooney.

Might not have been required, but I un-assed mine when the time came!

Not sure about other aircraft, but it is hard to land an early bonanza without either the gear or the flaps down- just to slick. (Yea, it can be done, but the sight picture and speed differences will get your attention.) Best to alway put gear down before flaps.

I have found a foolproof method of ensuring I will never have a gear up landing. When I run through my landing checklist my gear is already down and welded. Works every time! :D
