was listening to the Sun n’ Fun Parker Lake arrival this afternoon. What a cluster. Gonna be some fist fights tonight after all the conflicts, calling out, & harsh words. A couple were ejected from the area & told to go elsewhere by ATC. Controllers were competent but overwhelmed by people who wouldn’t listen & those griping about being sent back to the Middle of Nowhere starting fix 4 or more times. Glad the SwampCat could use the Paradise grass strip.IMG_0134.jpeg

Damn - sounds like a different vibe than Oshkosh? Sturgis of the Cessna and Piper gangs?

What is odd is that the Oshkosh Fisk arrival from Endeavour Bridge to Ripon is about 15 miles, about the same distance as from the Middle of Nowhere to the Smoke Stacks at Lake Parker, but as chaotic as the Fisk can sometimes be, it doesn’t feel as out of control as the Lake Parker arrival. (Not that I’ve flown either, just watched & listened to them on Fridays the last several years).
Controllers all seem equally competent, even natured, & cool under fire (and they took some fire yesterday). Maybe it’s because they use two runways at OSH & they can land more planes more quickly.

I like cake. But milk gives me gas.

My wife kept asking "Why do all these planes keep flying over us?" I should have shown her the map.

There’s a Cake Tower? Every airport should have a damn cake tower.

Forty years ago this month, we unveiled our Hydrocake water ...

The Publix Birthday Cake Water Tower at sunset Wednesday night ...

Uh, what? The whole Fisk arrival is 44nm, and from Endeavor Bridge to Ripon is 29 of that.

Generally speaking, I think people prepare more for Oshkosh than SnF.
Yes, because you have to. My first trip to SnF was after having done the OSH arrival 9 times, and I prepared the same way. Afterwards, I felt like I wasted my time - At SnF the controllers have enough time for hand-holding and as they're very helpful people, that's what they do.

I bet that a lot of the people who show up relatively unprepared for OSH are those who have gone into SnF and think it's going to be the same. Nuh-uh. OSH is like 5x SnF if not more.

I suppose if you are referring to planning what parties they plan on attending and what they are taking to these parties you would be correct. As as as flight preparation, you are being wishful.

part of the problem is they changed the arrival slightly and nobody read the notam.

The main reason why I don’t do fly ins. Too many pilots that spend their whole life in their own traffic pattern or just stick to that one airport for a lunch run, now wanna put on their big boy pants. I don’t have the patience to deal with the guys that have never flown into a towers airport now having to deal with someone giving specific instructions on what to do, clustered in with a bunch of other pilots with varying degree of experience and competence.

You’re painting with a pretty wide brush there.
I thoroughly enjoyed going every year.
Where else can you fly head to tail butt to butt and never get violated for it?

Would love if someone compiled a daily highlights reel of the comms on the Sun n' Fun VFR arrivals. Oshkosh too.

I try to tune in to the Fisk arrival while sitting at my desk during Oshkosh. It's always entertaining.

I think the wrong way takeoff from a taxiway by the old guy at OSH last year sets the bar so high that all other highlights are embarrassed to be included.

99% of the pilots who go to these things prepare and do just fine. It's just that you're gonna hear about the 1%, or the .1%, or especially the .01% like Mr. "I'm just gonna take off from this taxiway without saying anything" at Oshkosh last year.

Interest in general aviation must be up. And that’s a good thing!

Ah yes, the saga of N4301R. As I recall, he was a hot mess on the Fisk arrival as well.

Always wondered about "the rest of the story" with that. Looks like the aircraft has a new owner and a new base in Montana as of late last year, so I assume the pilot sold the plane and hung up his spurs.

I watched Aviation101s arrival. Josh and Chelsea did 5 trips around the I-4 return before getting in.
