Why am I starting to see Go Pro cameras on Motor Cycle Helmets? Most of the time I see this on the Freeway. What is the purpose?
Anyone else notice this.

Have you not heard of YouTube? People either think that everything they do is so cool it all needs to be on YT or FB, or they just 'roll tape' all the time incase they need evidence. I don't think there is a car left in Russia that isn't videoing full time.

That's funny you mention that. Two days ago I saw one on a guy. It's either there to video them doing tricks, going fast, etc...or it's there as a dash cam. The guy I saw popped a wheelie so I assume he is making a vid of him doing tricks and just general riding. If you think about it, no different than it being in a plane. Well the plane videos interest me more but I'm biased. Haha

Some guys run them for evidence in case of a collision. Cops and insurance companies tend to assign blame to the motorcyclists no matter what. It also keeps car drivers in check. People notice them and act differently. I carry one on my bicycle in an obvious place and it cuts the level of driver harrasment I receive down considerably. I don't even have it running most of the time.

What is this YouTube you speak of?

Anyway what is exciting to watch going down the freeway. Looking at traffic? "Sarcasm" Woo hoo.

Or they are expecting some day they will have an accident and they have who's fault proof.

Same reason as you are starting to see GoPro cameras on airplanes, ski helmets, scuba gear, surf boards...

Exactly. In all of those cases. Unless one is a bit less cynical.

The stunters have them on their helmets so they can film all the wheelies, stoppies, and other assorted nutty tricks.

If a motorcyclist was smart they'd mount it backwards and monitor it in front of them.

What's the problem? Once in a million you get a video that makes it all worth it.

I get that but these guys look to be your average Joe motorcycle rider. Don't look like the stunt type.

It helps keep the cops off your butt if you don't look like a stunter. In DFW, a furred out bike will get you pulled over, where a cop wouldn't give a stock bike a second glance. It also helps with anti-bike cops. In Arlington, we all started recording for about a year to get the cops back under control. They were performing hit and runs dozens of times a day, and framing people for stuff they didnt do. When a cop's hit and run ended up in a Marine dying, the video was more than welcome by his fellow Marines.

Does it just record it all or do they do like CVRs and record over old stuff making a 30 or 60 or whatever minute loop of the most recent?

Also, how much data can they store in terms of bytes and time?

Yeah, I don't see it as a problem except having this goofy POS riding around on your head. I imagine it won't be long before helmets are sold with cameras neatly installed in them.

For a complete answer, download a GoPro manual.

Short story:

1) You can set it up in a wide variety of ways, including looping, IIRC.

2) Recording duration depends mainly on Micro-SD card capacity and the resolution/fps you've chosen.

Do you have more info on this? Google is no help.

At least that is something exciting to watch.

It's only exciting if your into that hobby. I put it in my plane sometimes, I always use it when I SCUBA dive. But.....in both activities, since I did it, I get bored watching and editing the video to the point I never get a finished product. If I'm bored watching it and editing it I can only image what viewers think. So most of my videos never make it to edited final products. Hahaha

I doubt it will be. The cop is a missing person. We could never get the press to do anything, they would rather make sportbike riders look like criminals. Info was all over dfwsportbike and sportbikehype forums, but they aren't around any more.

My buddies nice little ride across RRSH:

It's a little better if you click 720HD

See, to me that's as boring as watching baseball or football. It's also fairly stupid, especially on some public road that is know as a "race way". All these devices produce metadata which stays with the video. Some cop sitting around the office with an injury watching YouTube could easily be put to work with a metadata search and start mailing out tickets and issuing warrants using the evidence you generated and made public.

Because much more exciting than on a Motorcycle on a daily commute. :dunno:
You appear to be assuming: (1) everything that occurs in an airplane is exciting, (2) nothing that occurs on a motorcycle is exciting, (3) the attachment of the GoPro means it's always on, and (4) the person keeps and publishes every minute recorded.

3) Recording duration unless plugged depends also on battery life. The camera I use has far more hours storage on its 32 GB Micro SD at 1080p/30fps than it's ~70-80 minute battery life.

If I am having a good day flying, absolutely nothing 'exciting' happened. That's not to say it wasn't pleasant, just nothing to kick in the adrenaline.

I guess you have a point but for me everything about flying excites me and Motorcycles I could care less.

Only to pilots...motorcyclists don't care. Most of these cyclists have the cameras mounted all the time so when they decide to go into "antics" they can record their lunacy for all their friends.

the guy in the truck in this video got 2 years in prison because of this video. It really starts at the 2:15 mark.

I used to run with these folks when I had my Motorcycle. It was fun and still is fun to watch some of their videos.

Cops were deliberately running over motorcyclists to the point of killing one, there's video of it, and one of the cops disappeared, but it never made the news. That's pretty surprising.:hairraise:

Yup, when the cops are making threats, some people get scared. This was pre YouTube, back when camcorders recorded straight to VHS. It got turned over to people who took care of it. Back when texting was just text and phones didn't get on the net. Remember those days? It wasn't that long ago.

If you rode a motorcycle, especially in traffic, and you saw the number of people who cut you off or just do not see you and therefore endanger your life, you would want to use a GoPro too.

I love to ride my motorcycle, and in fact teach motorcycle riding, but it is by far the most dangerous thing I do. Including flying little airplanes.

People just do not see you when you are on your motorcycle. And contrary to what many people say loud pipes do not solve the problem.

I think the helmet mounted ones look dorky, but have been sorely tempted to employ one in case my local constabulary decides to use my sport bike as a revenue generating opportunity. These days I simply would not put it past them.
