I drive my Jeep soft-top on occasion - more so now that my son bought his own car! :) and its noisy.

Says to my self "Hey, Self. Don't you have noise canceling headsets (Lightspeed Sierra) for the plane? What would it take to make those work in the Jeep? And tap into the radio? Or just use the bluetooth to the phone?"

Self says "Hmmm? Power and audio, I guess?"

Check on the state or local laws. Go for foam ear plugs instead. I use them any time I'm on interstates or backroads with little or no traffic stops for more than 20 min. Assuming traffic is moving, of course.

Another option is noise blocking earbuds like Etymotics. They are unobtrusive, and do a good job of blocking the noise. I sometimes use them on the motorcycle when I want music or radio. Otherwise I use rubber earplugs.

Not wise to block out traffic noise, ie ambulances, someone honking, etc plus as mentioned previously, state laws. Although I can understand if it's your wie or girlfried! :yesnod::lol:

Just drove the convertible to work this morning, it was gorgeously sunny and 54F. Can't wait to drive it home this afternoon!

glad I'm not driving today here ...

Driving your Jeep with the Lightspeeds on. (Looking about as .. ahem .. handsome as I did mowing the meadow on a lawn tractor with my ANRs on!)

Unfortunately there is this...

1411. Use of earphones while driving.
(1) (a) No person shall operate a motor vehicle while wearing earphones.
(b) For purposes of this subsection (1), “earphones” includes any headset, radio, tape player, or other similar device which provides the listener with radio programs, music, or other recorded information through a device attached to the head and which covers all of or a portion of the ears. “Earphones” does not include speakers or other listening devices which are built into protective headgear.
(2) Any person who violates this section commits a class B traffic infraction.

hmmm. I guess the firefighters wearing their DCs into their trucks don't have to adhere to 1411 ... unless 1411.1b protective headgear clause gives them their out?

if used only to block out ambient noise, not silly or geeky. I do it on my 3hr drives to civilization and arrive much happier than without (bose A20s).
I think the rule is meant to avoid distraction from music etc while driving. If used only for noise cancellation, it can improve your driving (yes, that would be tough to convince a trooper of)

Had a jeep with a hardtop and a jeep with a softtop. sold the one with the hardtop ...

Can you not have both on at the same time on the TJ? You can on the JK

It shouldn't be THAT loud.

Might want to look into a new soft top, I drive a TJ wrangler with ether no top or a soft top and I don't have those issues.

Look into a thick "sail cloth" bowless (no metal bows) fastback type top, way better, you can even get them with glass windows.

1997 YJ with OEM softtop, plastic windows, 65mph on the highway with 30-40moh wind gusts at times (or worse) yeah, can't hear the radio. It's loud. But I don't do that drive in it that often.
And no, the YJ doesn't allow both hard and soft tops together.

My top has been noticeably louder over the past year. I have an '06 tj with the original top and windows. Guess 10 years is pretty good..... but still would rather spend that money on the plane :)

Unless you've changed the radio, it wasn't the greatest to listen to even at a standstill. :D

One benefit of letting my son use the jeep for his last year of college. He put a pretty nice radio in it. I scored an overhead speaker/light bar that I have yet to install, which will help the radio but in the end, just increase the sound levels.

you could buy a hardtop

I have both options on my 1999 TJ and the hardtop isn't all that quiet, either.

Yup. 1995 was the last year for the YJ and there is no 1996 model Wrangler. :D
