Hello POA. Seems there's not much beta available online and I'm sure Garmin makes it difficult by design, but curious if anyone here knows anyone who knows anyone who's successfully refreshed the battery in one of the Garmin portable GDL 50 ADSB-in units? My son is having intermittent trouble with his to the point it now won't even work reliably when plugged in to cigarette adapter DC power. We had bought it used originally, and I'm guessing a few winters worth of freezing MN and MT temps have done the battery in.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, search for posts on here, someone has posted his services before.

Thanks Ed, I thought I had seen that too so I had done a fairly thorough search both here and on google but can't find any confirmed successes.

Thanks George. I recall seeing that message a while back while researching ADSB portables - couldn't find it, so thank you. I have sent Chris Short a message. Will report back with any findings.

If you're able to successfully turn a bit driver 3 tries out of 5, you can replace the battery, it's a very simple 2-wire connector and the PCBs are securely bolted down leaving the battery free. just be gentle pulling the two case halves apart - the faceplate has a small ribbon cable going to it that is easy to disconnect without trying. (easy flat-ribbon to re-attach, just a nuisance item)

Finding the replacement battery itself is damn near impossible though. I don't believe garmin has ever sold these and the chinesium available for sale are... super suspect for use in an aircraft.

$0.02

It sounds like no problem for Chris Short, who responded when I contacted him through the palmdr.com web page. Will send it to him and report back once done. Thank you.
