Does anyone know if a King KI-209 indicator can be used as a CDI with a 420w to show left/right and up/down?

It shows the VOR/LOC Composite outputs on connector P4006, the 420W does not have that connector.

420W cannot interface with a King CDI requiring composite VOR/LOC signal such as the KI-204, KI-209.

You need the 209A, as it supports GPS. The regular 209 has a built-in converter that generally prevents the GPS signal from working. Since the 420W only has GPS output (no NAV receiver) you need an indicator that does not have a built-in VOC/LOC converter. That means a Garmin CDI, a King 209A, or one of the Collins units with glideslope (can't recall the model #).

Echo...the 209A will work with the 400-/500- series. There are others that will work as well, like the IND-350/351. With the 420 you don't need the GPS/VLOC annunciation since it's always going to be the GPS and since it's a WAAS unit, you don't even legally need to have a VOR receiver in the plane. I was going to use a 209A in my Warrior when I installed my 430W back in 2012, but the shop talked me into the Garmin (mid-continent) CDI because of the annunciation...it actually wasn't needed by the regs, but hey...the shop got an extra $1600.
