GA sucks, and also doesn't.

On the list of crappy things to do, sometimes flying GA is ranked just above a colonoscopy, but below having four wisdom teeth pulled during the same office visit.

You expressed the situation perfectly with this:

"I feel like a combination of Clark W. Griswold and Jerry Gallo/Callo/Vincent Gambini."

When reading that line, I busted out laughing.

When GA doesn't suck (just to make this thread a little more positive): I had my fair share of failed trips in our Cherokee earlier this year. I live in a town called Regina in Canada and occasionally have to travel to a city called Winnipeg for business. That's a six hour drive without stopping. Usually, I need at least one fuel and bio break on the way and traffic usually is a bit slower going out of Regina and into Winnipeg than what Google Maps thinks it's going to be, so it ends up being more like seven hours driving. This week, I had to go to Winnipeg again and took the Cherokee. Little over three hours each way, non-stop. Flew in the night before, went to my meetings in the morning, grabbed some dinner in town and flew back, landing just after sunset and went to sleep in my own bed instead of some hotel. Sometimes, GA doesn't suck at all... Until the next thing fails I guess lol.

Doesn’t sound like GA sux, sounds like SEP sux. Time for a King Air.

King Airs break just as often, except a single part can cost as much as a regular GA spam can. I think a set of tires and brakes is around the $20k mark.

But a dog won’t be able to open the self loading baggage door in flight and turbines don’t require magnetos, so OP would not have had to divert nor be left AOG due to a bad mag.

GA doesn’t suk. Not sure the same can’t be said of some PICs

Personally I think any problems with the airplane are going to be entirely dwarfed by a Floridian spouse and spawn in their first Michigan winter. One good thing about airplanes, when you aren't flying them they're quiet...
