Fuel shortages?

I was out on Wake Island (yes, the entrance to no where) and we had Trans-Pacs coming through regularly. The F-18 has to hit the tanker five to seven times between Honolulu and Wake and another five times to get to Japan. I can see why EvilEagle lets the LT's do it.

We usually average almost one refueling every 90 mins during ocean crossings because we always have to have enough to divert if we have a problem. So, you never get close to empty, just keep topping off the whole way there. I've refueled 15 times on one 13 hour sortie before... Yeah I'm ok never doing that again.

It's all about the money,if your wiling to pay the fuel will be there.

This.

I'm a petroleum engineer ('petrolero' in Spanish). I'm one of the people who finds and develops petroleum.

You have nothing to worry about. There is more oil - in the ground, already found and proved - than has ever been produced in the history of oil and gas.

The reason is that few petroleum reservoirs have produced more than 35% of their original oil in place and >50% is very rare indeed. In most cases more of it can be had through the use of already-known technologies (horizontal drilling, waterflooding, cyclic steam injection, steam flooding, CO2 flooding, Nitrogen flooding, polymer flooding, etc. depending on the exact conditions).

Add in shale development, deep water offshore, and many other sources (subsea hydrates!) and it adds up to centuries upon centuries of resources.

We just have to have demand for it. How do we determine demand? Prices. Simple as that. Prices were sky high in 2008 so the industry went into overdrive. The industry met demand and then some and now prices are relatively low and the industry is going into underdrive. That's the way it works.

So as long as we don't muck with (i.e., artificially affect - as OPEC attempts but mostly fails to do for very long) the free-floating price of petroleum then we'll have all the supply we need for a very long time. Prices rise, prices fall and we all adjust accordingly.

Yeah, no Peak Oil in my time. I can definitely get behind that.

Yeah 'Peak Oil' hysteria was always just a failure of imagination and understanding. Plus the petroleum industry sucks at public relations - they'll let false information fly around the globe 20 times before they even start their engines. That has changed since the hydraulic fracturing mythology started.
