Ford F-150 owners...

They even have a 3.31 rear end which is common. I'm sure with the 10-speed transmission it's less of a factor, but I'd not personally go below 3.55.
Yes I think 3:31 is standard and probably would suit my needs fine if I didn't want to tow a car trailer. But it seems if you want to order anything tow related they want you to have at least a 3:55 which I understand why.
My dually had 4:10 gears, hence is why the fuel mileage was so bad.
Is a 2" hitch receiver standard on a 150?

With tow package

Yes, should be standard on most all of them. I haven't seen many that don't have the hitch standard. Might be able to option it without the receiver, but it's pretty much universal these days.

@Gary Ward let’s simplify a bit here. Do you want new or used?

Is 4x4 a requirement, a desire, or entirely unwanted?

That’s going to narrow down what the common trim and option packages are to recommend.

4x4 is a requirement.
Yes I spent some time on fords website trying to sort out what’s available. Its a job it seems.
I have many notes to ask the salesman Monday.
I am leaning toward new since 6.5 beds are so hard to find.

The Trailer Tow package is separate from the Tow/Haul package. The Trailer Tow is a ~$1K option on all configurations.

Tow/Haul is the integrated brake controller, backup assist, 7-pin connector and other tech stuff. Toy/Haul limits you to 3.55 or 3.73, IIRC.

Always a personal choice but I ordered a standard cab, 6.5 ft bed, 4x4 XLT with the 5.0 and have been very pleased. I get 19MPG in town and 22 on the highway while my neighbor's truck (2wd, ext. cab and eco-6 engine) burns more gas and hauls less.

Had an Eco Boost for a salesman truck. The engine was great. The transmission was crap. After sitting in the tranny shop for just shy of a year waiting for Ford parts, I sold it. I’d already had to replace it and bought a Chevy with a baby Duramax. I liked it so much, I bought another one for me personally. Never going to own another Ford. What a **** show.

I chose a 5.5’ bed because the 6.5 won’t fit in my garage. Hasn’t been an issue; I do occasionally haul around 8’ sheet goods, or a 10-11’ wing. That’s why we have little red flags…

Does a 5.5’ bed ride better than a 6.5’ bed? I am sure they are lighter. Are the body’s aluminum?

Aluminum bodied since 2015 or so. There’s no discernible difference in ride comfort however the 5.5 and 6.5 steering ratio is the same so turning radius is larger with the 6.5. There’s a bigger ride difference between 4x2 and 4x4 than 5.5 and 6.5.

The F-150 platform is going to ride better with 250lbs in the bed than without. You can bag the rear and re-spring it and put adjustable valve shocks and get less impact than 5 bags of sakrete. It is what it is, but it’s neither a Caddy nor a 3/4-ton in ride.

Thanks for all your expertise. Do you sell them or just know the model?
My current 250 rides better with a 100 Gal steel fuel tank in the bed. Fill it up and even better until the tank gets half full. Then I can feel the fuel sloshing around.

That’s a good point on the garage length. I never thought of that since mine has been outside since new. It won’t fit in my garage, not even close.

You can/could get the tow package with 3.55s. In some years, that was offered separately from max tow then HDPP.

The max tow was not just receiver, but also the trans cooler and tow/haul mode for the transmission. You’ll have to look by model year and build sheet see if the 3.55 incorporates the tow/haul or not.
Good point on the tow/haul mode for the transmission. My 250 has that I run in tow/haul all the time coming down hills. I miss that a ton when driving my wife’s XT5. Always got to use the brakes driving it.

….
I just know the model back to the twin I beam F100s. Really, back to the 50s era when they went from F1s to F100s.

Other than a blip in time when I had a K1500 Blazer with the 6.5 turbo diesel, they’re pretty much all I’ve owned. The last few were a 2010 FX2 Sport, then a 2017 KR150, and after that was stolen I replaced it with an ‘18 KR250 gasser I still have.

Happy to discuss further but for a cloth interior, the Sport/Lone Star FX4 is a good starting point and for leather an XLT FX4.

The Lone Star trim is essentially a cloth XLT with option package 301A and Tow/Haul which is the most commonly sold setup down here which is the biggest F-150 market in the US.

I’m curious on the calendar time it takes for your operation to hit that mark. I would guess it’s 24 months or less.
When our supply business was heavily reliant on our crews doing deliveries to west Texas, it was about 18-24 months. Now it’s closer to 48 months because it’s most local stuff.

Ford told me at OSH that the preferred pricing is coming back soon for EAA members. I bought all my trucks using it during Covid as even my fleet sales guy couldn’t match that price

I just bought a 1500 Silverado, 3.0 diesel, with the max towing package as a $700 option. There were maybe two in my desired configuration on the east coast. It will tow 12,900. I am seeing 30MPG on the highway. I am a fan of the economy.

These companies screw you over not allowing alacarte feature selection.

What is your mileage while towing.??

My son-in-law drove my new AT4X baby Duramax from TX to AK pulling a 26’ travel trailer and averaged about 18mpg. It’s like all trucks, stay at or below 65 and they do well. Go 75 or 80 and they drink fuel. That said, this motor’s DEF consumption goes up proportionately more than fuel consumption when pulling a trailer. I’ve had a couple of 3/4 ton Duramax trucks and this new 1/2 ton doesn’t give up anything for loads I’ll pull.

For clarity, this post is about a Chevy 1500, ATX4 is the trim.

Mine is a GMC, but yes. GM offers a 3.0 Duramax in 1/2 ton pickups and Suburbans. The point of defining AT4X is it’s lifted 2” and has AT tires, neither of which helps mileage.

That is not bad at all for towing, and I really am not too worried about fuel mileage while towing. My 2500HD 6.6 Duramax turned 20 years old last month, and I am thinking on getting the 1/2 ton baby Duramax. I really don't need a 3/4 ton any more.

Here's my next, with the 3.0L duramax diesel and supercruise

2018 XLT 5.0. Bad year for the 5.0 due to cam phaser issues. Mine had them replaced at around 40k miles. Also, you have to watch the oil level, as mine does burn oil between changes. That said, I love it. Comfortable to drive, and I get ~17 highway here in TN, but when I go up north IL/WI to flatland, I get around 20 highway.
My Brother has a 2018 XLT F-150 with the 5.0.
I don't think he has had trouble with his 5.0? I have to see how many miles he has on it.

I've had 5.0's in all my pickups, mustangs also, last one had 170,000. No problems with any of them. I will probably put a super charger on the new 4x4 I recently purchased. The 5.0 is pretty much bullet proof.
There was a year or two where they burned some oil which is usually resolved with a throttle position programing fix.

I ordered a F-150 yesterday. Sounds like it will take 8-12 weeks to get it?
It was mentioned the 5.0 get's put in the mustangs also which may take longer to get one? The salesman indicated that they don't sell that many 5.0.
My 2007 mustang has the 3 valve 4.6 motor in it, it seems to go pretty good with a custom tune.

That sounds about normal for a customer order honestly, as 4 weeks is about the quickest you’ll ever get it. Keep in mind dealer orders are constantly flowing in and you’re in line behind them. Cab and bed selection drive wheelbase, frame length, and driveline length. Though there’s some modularity across the F-series it’s not in those areas.

Pre-SuperDuty era, when the F-150 was a “heavy half-ton”, there were some model years with shared frame rails.

So I traded my truck in a couple days after I ordered the new one.
First I spent half a day removing the snow plow mount and wiring. It is going on another F250 work truck we have. The plow is too big for a F150.
I cleaned out 12 years of heavy tools and a fuel tank and pump in the bed. Wow did that thing ride rough with no weight in it going to the dealer.

Reason I got it to them before getting the new one was the trans was going out, shifting funny between 3 and 4th. I took a hit on trade in value because of the trans. I wanted it out of my way and I was not going to drive it anymore to preserve the trans so I didn't loose anymore trade in value on the thing.
I cleaned out everything and vacuum it out, washed it. I forgot about one thing that got left inside it.
An air tag! I couldn't remember where I put it at first in the truck.
I have been watching it move around just about everyday since the dealer had it. It only sat on their lot for 24 hrs. Then it went to another dealer in town for about 36-48 hrs. Then it went to another Ford dealer up in Mid Ohio. It was there for about 48 hours and then it went north and spent a night or two in some ones driveway. I thought maybe they bought it?
But then it went to a small independent car dealer in a small town Ohio.

So last evening I flew up there to find it in this dealer's parking lot just for fun and somewhere to fly the plane. Not many crew cab 8 foot beds out there and that is what stuck me from the air when I was looking for it. Still had the spare tire in the bed that I put there before taking it to the dealer.
The air tag gives you approximation circle so I wasn't sure it was at a house or this dealer next door. Turned out it was in the dealers lot.

Does this make me a truck stalker?

Bad news for Ford. I hope the timing of this doesn’t impact your delivery.

From the article:

The three-alarm fire on Sept. 16 brought down part of the factory’s roof, requiring 26 area fire departments to extinguish, according to the Oswego County fire coordinators office. Responders arrived at the site within two minutes of receiving a call; about 175 firefighters fought the blaze. With the roof alight and at risk of collapse, firefighters needed to work almost entirely from ladder trucks.

The hot mill was destroyed.

Saw that...I will call my salesman and see what he thinks.
Thanks

Today March 6th 2026 I finally took delivery of a 2026 F150.
When I ordered it, Sept 14 2025, it was going to be a 2025.
11-11-2025 the salesman had to reorder a 2026.

Some things changed like the color, the blue I wanted is not available in 2026.
Not sure if the fire caused the delay, or the 6.5' bed or a trim piece missing on the passenger side console!!

They didn't notice it missing until I got there today. He said it could have been the hold up getting it? I called him quite a bit and he called Ford a lot he said, so they have may have just sent it without for now. I am OK with it waiting for the trim to come in.
It was a long winter not having a truck. I did drive a work 4X4 truck for a while this past winter with a snow plow on it.
My wife is glad that I won't be driving her car as much.IMG_6311.jpegIMG_6307.jpeg

Whatever truck you get just make sure the first thung you do is take the awful sticker off the rear quartepanel. There is no point in advertising what wheels on your vehicle do the driving and thise things don't age at the same rate as the paint. Stickers are for bumpers not quarter panels.
