Flying Wild Alaska

I always thought "push forward to go faster" made the most sense to me. But I'm not a fireman. :D

Yes, now it seems funny that I had that problem. But they both were different and I had to stop and think where I was until it came by reflex.

An example of the law of Primacy, as Ron would say. And then the law of Exercise kicked in.

No, it was a joke.

The only places that could 'secede' are the ones that were some sort of entity before becoming states. The colonies, California and maybe texas. The rest, like Alaska were possessions of the federal goverment before they were turned into states.

Texas is the only that was ever its own country, so it's also the only state that can secede.

And I recall hearing somewhere that it also has the authority (not that it would ever happen) to divide into 5 or 6 separate states. Can you imagine 10 senators from the state of Texas? If that doesn't scare you... :D

Actually, that's false. It's actually the only US State that has had the legality of secession decided upon, in Texas v. White, and it was decided that they had entered into a perpetual union.

In terms of Texas being the only independent state that entered the US, the original 13 colonies all considered themselves independent before entering into the Articles of Confederation, and Hawaii was a sovereign nation as well before entering into a treaty of annexation.

Anyone else see this? http://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=139745

The thing I do like about this show is the Boss is not an a$$. Ever watch OCC or Red Jacket and you will know what I mean.
Now if they can drop the drama it would be a great show.

Hawaii was a Kingdom before the yankee imperialist sugar barons toppled its goverment and sold it out to the US ;) . After they cut loose from the british, the colonies were technically free to join any other broke and fractious budding nation ;) .

So why didn't the robber barons just annex BC from those wimps in Canada so we could achieve the "manifest destiny" of making Alaska contiguous?

Last time that was tried, it turned out that the British weren't as busy with Napoleon as we thought they would be.

RUNAWAY TRIM!!!!!

Duhn-da-unhn-da DUNN!!

HE COULD LOSE CONTROL OF THE PLANE! Even after he pulled the trim breaker! ..and used his knee to on the trim wheel disengage the trim motor...the trim wheel that still works...that you see him suing.

Duhn-da-unhn-da DUNN!!

Jim can't land the SuperCub if Ariel can't pull the flaps! Did you see that rough landing? THANK FSM he's a good pilot and he was able to handle it! (Does it have a Johnson bar for flaps? He says "switch." You just know she couldn't grok pushing the release button.)

Duhn-da-unhn-da DUNN!!

Luckily he had flaps on takeoff.

It's a Johnson Bar style in the front seat on the left side, has a release button that must be pushed, but you can't push it while you are pulling on it.

OBTW...... landing in deep snow with a light aircraft is always rough, that was pretty smooth actually.

According to the FAA register it's not a Super Cub -- it's a PA-12, no doubt modified with Super Cub wings and landing gear.

In other words, that airplane didn't even have flaps when it was built. How did it ever land?!

The editing cracks me up. I hope Jim and Ariel weren't having that dialogue about the flaps when they're ten feet off the snow, as the juxtaposition of interior and exterior shots suggested. :hairraise:

PA 12s are often referred to as super cubs when they have that many STCs applied, It's actually the sister ship to the aircraft pictured below.and the one now for sale at Cub Crafters site, for 186k, built by the same guy.

Did anyone notice that the skis on the plane that is being put on the runway doesn't have wheels? The plane that was flying and landing did. I think it was two different planes.

It was the same plane. The wheels are up or down relative to the skis. But not having flaps, now that's just crazy!

Not surprising. He flew a plane that had a flap switch and that one doesn't.

Icing is responsible for 64% of all single engine airplane crashes and the FAA says I can't takeoff without a mile visibility....

Noone tell them I took off 500 and a half from BAZ today......

You can take off in zero/zero... but you're not a commercial operator.

My favorite from tonight's episode is the icing that is strait up and down and the Unalakleet landing that is initially lines up on 1L, lands on 15 with a dirt landing, and then is on a paved strip.

... or the 207 with the magic changeable registration numbers on the side -- N9400M on short final, then something ending in 73U as the airplane touches down.

I just like the trucker style mud-flaps.

I gave up tracking the continuity errors in Season 1 and just watch now for the pretty views and good old airplane porn. The "drama" is annoying. ;)

:yesnod: I was wondering who was flying the plane and was eyes outside.....

I laughed out loud when I saw the ice hanging straight down. I think they call that ramp ice. ;)

My wife is getting frustrated watching the show with me while I correct all the inaccuracies. She said "I bet a lot of people enjoy this show a lot more if they don't have pilots watching it with them." :D

I've missed on or two episodes this season, but:

I haven't seen one scene yet of an off-airport landing with pax. There has been one or two shots of off-airport landings, but none with a anybody inside other than the pilot and a bunch of cameras.

Last year there were quite a few landings on gravel bars and out in the middle of nowhere to pick up or drop off passengers.

Ok guys, I have a totally stupid question.

With all the drama about getting vaccines and antibiotics to the distant towns in questionable weather, why don't they rig a plane to do parachute drops of supplies? Seems pretty simple and legal to drop 10-20 lbs of supplies under a parachute.

I thought the same thing. When the lady drops the vaccines off at the airport, she specifies that they be hand-carried to the airport, suggesting that they're fragile.

Some of the other supplies I suppose could be dropped, but unless it were a life or death emergency I'd bet the logistic and liability problems would rule it out.

Well, since they are always flying in 40kt xwinds, they may need to chase that chute a ways.

Last season started off great. Began to lose interest by the end of the season ( too much fluff, and contrived drama) This season is far worse. Might have something to do with the ding-bat producer, Ariel Tweeto. A real let down from a show that had great potential.

I kinda agree. It seems like last season had alot more flying and alot less drama.
