I am posting for my wife who just got her license in January. (I quit flying in 1978 due to eyesight and hearing problems). She has about 50 hours cross country in her Cessna 172 since getting her license. She flew from East Florida to Mississippi through the Panama City/ Destin corridor. She is actually a very good pilot and is comfortable on the radio and using flight following. She has a Garmin 496 GPS. With all that background, she is planning to fly from Florida to Gwinnett County Ga, which is just north of that giant, intimidating place knows as ATL. Are there any special words of wisdom or special rules she needs to be aware of? She took an on-line course prior to flying through Destin, and that was helpful. Is there anything similar for Atlanta?

I would probably say stay clear of the Bravo by going out to the east and around. LZU is just under the Mode "C" veil. I'm sure others will chime in shortly.

Watch your altitudes and you'll be fine. It isn't rocket surgery. -)

You didn't say where in Florida she is strating from but it may not make a difference. KLZU is on the edge of the ATL Bravo airspace and beneath the 10K-12.5K outer ring. No big deal really. Just have her contact her local approach for flight following or call Jacksonville Center (Jax) direct. Jax will hand off to Atlanta approach to transisiton the Macon/Warner Robbins AFB area and then the Atlanta airspace on to KLZU. Stay below 8000' and they will take care of you. Never been denied radar service from ATL. The TUCKR intersection is a good point to naviagte to before turning direct to LZU. Good luck with it...

John,

I am based at LZU and have made the run between here and the Jacksonville area many times. It'll be a piece of cake. Gwinnett is under the 100/125 ring of the Class B, so unless your wife is flying real high, there should be no problems with it.

The Atlanta controllers are real nice and should have plenty of time to provide VFR advisories (flight following).

I think the barely less expensive fuel is at Aircraft Specialists, which is on the south side of the field. Which is good because it's next to the Flying Machine restaurant. But the real cheap fuel in the area is a little more to the northeast, at Jackson County (19A).

PM me if you need any more flight planning tips.

Thanks all. That is what we thought, but we didn't want to find out too late that we should have asked.

My airport 9A1 is just 20 miles south of LZU. If she has any MX or other issues like that and needs help, I would be glad to be a resource.

Did my first 20 hours at LZU. I believe it's under a 10,000 foot shelf of the class B, and near to 8000 and 6000 shelves. Just know your position and altitude and you'll be fine. The controllers at LZU are generally very nice, helpful folks.

Welcome to the board, you and your wife.

Destin is a one of a kind animal. Thats why the on line course exists for it.. That being said, I've made it in there several times before the video existed.

I've not been to Atlanta, but have been into Houston and DFW's terminal airspace. If shes ok with flight following, use it. Nothing special other than make sure you hear "cleared into the bravo airspace" before accepting vectors into it. Even if she stays out of the bravo, use the Flight Following if its available.
