Flying over water

I did that once, years ago, in a NORDO T-Craft enroute to CT. It was a neat experience, made me nervous as hell, and I never felt the desire to do it again.
It was just the norm for a nunmer of us based at FRG. Especially getting one of us to or from our mechanic at Robinsville (N87). You could climb out of FRG and genrally you'd get a Class B Clearance, but then you might get vectored around or have to climb to some rediculous altitude. So simpler to drop down and scoot under the CBA.

Never mind…

Too bad, now hitch a ride??
I don’t know I’ve got a rental car. I gotta get back. I’ve been dealing with this plane for a while now my lawn is needs to be mowed and I’m just ready for this crap to be done with for the year. If I go it’ll be flying commercial and I don’t know how easy it’ll be to find a place to sleep

Dude! Bummer.

Went through my brakes earlier this year because I had a leaking piston seal and decided it was time to do the whole system from top to bottom. Seals - master and caliper, pads, rotors, pump out the old fluid...
I was sure I had a couple sets of pads. Absolutely sure.
Started the master cylinders, both sides. Moved on to the pads on the non-leaking side, got that done, undid the other side, went to put my second set of pads that had to be at the bottom of the box because I new I had more. Just knew it.

It only took a week and a half or so to get a second set of brake pads.

But at least, my airplane was in my hangar...

Fwiw department...

90 minutes in Lake Michigan
Wow.

Sounds like it was quite an ordeal even though they survived - And that's with a boat equipped with AIS and an EPIRB, and all of the crew wearing life jackets with strobes and PLBs, plus a ditch bag with spotlights and flares. That is *FAR* better equipped than people ever seem to talk about doing in their airplane, and it was still barely enough.

The Great Lakes have been lethal many a time, and must be respected.

Rules for the race require a raft, not sure why it wasn't deployed...
The article said they were delivering it to the next crew who was going to do a race starting tomorrow, so maybe that next crew had the raft already down in Chicago.
