Floatplane: Pull up onto the step, stay under the bridge

I loved getting my SES. I wish there were more places to land in GA.

Word on the street is that Lake Lanier should be approved sometime in the future.

I don't see what the big deal is either with the takeoff. People that know nothing about aviation think everything about it is dangerous, especially something like this that you don't see everyday.

I don't have a float plane rating. How do you determine which bodies of water are prohibited? I would have thought it would be okay to land on any lake.

The Seaplane Pilot's Association has a list of prohibited bodies of water by local and state ordinance (at least they used to). If it's not prohibited it is allowed at pilot discretion and liability.

The only prohibitions I observed when I was in Florida were Municipal, on a lake that was completely withing the city limits. In such a case I suppose the residents on the lake can persuade the City Council to make an ordinance but other than that it's not so easy to get a prohibition as far as I know.

Not sure how exactly California goes about it but I'm pretty sure many lakes there are prohibited, I recall something about wide spread prohibition in Colorado as well.

All bodies of water are prohibited in Colorado.

Most native administered waters are closed to seaplanes in Washington. Lake quinault, the NA side of Lake Roosevelt, Lake Ozette.......

Are seaplane rules different between FAR and CAR?

In what respect? Certification rules have altered, and operational rules have been superseded. IOW if there were differences the wouldn't be relevant to this.

Just wondering if the CAR was worded differently from FAR when it came to "except when necessary for takeoff..."

These aren't the old days and we live in a new world. Things that move fast and have an engine attached to them are no longer things of wonder and amazement, but rather a threat to be feared. Don't like it? Tough! It's the way it is. There are far, far more kayakers and row boaters then there will ever be seaplane pilots. Guess who's going to win that fight?

Being an avid Jet Skier and long time member of the AWA (American Watercraft Association) I can tell you that if you want to retain your rights to a waterway, you need to be respectful and considerate to others on the water regardless of legalities. You have to except that every kayaker, row boater, sailor and fisherman hates you. Be different, be courteous, be respectful and be friendly. That's the only hope.

I am surprised that people reacted the way they did to this takeoff, but remember, all small plane pilots now have a well established reputation for being rich guy idiots that break the rules and crash a lot. Just like Jet Skiers do. I'm sure those watching believed there was only a 50/50 chance of him making it past the bridge.

The lesson for the future is, if seaplane pilots want to keep landing and taking off from that river, they are best advised to taxi under the bridge and then take off regardless of whatever the regs say. Municipalities and the people that vote there don't give a crap about whatever the federal regulations are and have the power to ban seaplanes from the area as they see fit.

It is what it is.:(
