Floatplane: Pull up onto the step, stay under the bridge

Whatever next, someone might drive a speed boat under the bridge? About as shocking.

The fun part is, "There were rowboats out there!"

What if I told you that the plane has the same right of way as a power boat?

I can't seem to find anything wrong with what he did.

I swear, Canadians are frightened by their own shadows!

Yeah you cant do that. Need to stay on the water under the bridge.

There oughtta be a law... Requiring rowboaters to wear PFDs. They could get run over by a floatplane or something.

laugh all you want, but in the real world clowns like that are how you get floatplanes banned from an area

You can be smug about it but the float pilot did nothing wrong or dangerous. Same thing as all the other call the cops because we saw a plane do something normal events that have happened. If that float pilot is guilty of bad piloting, by the same standard so are you.

I don't think it's the pilots who get planes banned. It is the whiny earth-dwellers who complain about it to local news stations and create a huge hype about a non-event.
Yes, there are regulations to keep aviation safe but nothing jumps out of the video like endangerment of human life. For all we know, the water past the bridge might be dangerous - filled with stumps and/or ferries crossing the river.

Float planes on water? Sightseeing helicopters touring landmarks? Airplanes at airshows? Let's ban them all!
Don't forget, there is no greater power in the world than miffed soccer moms with agenda and nothing better to do. :D

Looks good to me,wasn't even close to the rowers.

I got my ASES from a guy in Florida who was a retired Navy A7 pilot and had a real attitude about where, when and how you can operate your floatplane. He was in constant battle with the local authorities in the Orlando area who were trying to exercise authority over something they had no authority over. Now you can say it's yahoos who cause the problem but in the eyes of non-pilot boater or shore bound Cosmopolitan drinkers EVERY floatplane pilot is a yahoo.

I'm sure that Rich relished proving his point and I had a great time learning to fly floats while demonstrating to others that I had every right to be there just as much as the all the other yahoos on their bass boats and jet skis.

The only difference between us was that I could fly.

I loved getting my SES. I wish there were more places to land in GA.

Word on the street is that Lake Lanier should be approved sometime in the future.

actualy he did. Maybe not dangerous, but wrong. He needed to stay on the water under the bridge. Flying under a bridge will attract attention regardness of what's hanging under the plane.

Nothing wrong with flying under bridges. I've done it, others here have as well I'm sure. Staying on the step is more dangerous to the rowboat racers, the pilot and the airplane. Hitting submerged junk she step taxing would make a better video but be worse for all concerned. Obviously trying to outclimb the bridge would be a bad idea.

This is what I learned from my instructor. You don't need permission. You can't land where it's prohibited and if there is no prohibition you've got every much right to be there as that dude in his bass boat.

There was absolutely nothing dangerous or against the rules about what he did. The rowers were far further than law or safety dictate and he has the same right to operate there as any powerboat unless there is a seaplane prohibition there. Why stay on the water under the bridge? Staying on the water has more risk factor, as well as more disturbance of small waterborne vessels.

This is just sad that people got all flustered because a seaplane invaded their claimed space.

I swear, MOST PEOPLE are frightened by their own shadows!
fixed that for you.

And most people make a big deal out of this kind of stuff then jump in their car and SPEED home, blowing through red lights not giving that any thought nor caring THEY are in the wrong. Someone I know was ranting because he was stopped by police. He was doing 50 in a 30 and blamed the police?!?! WTF! and I told him so.

Yep, totally correct.

From what I could see he was plenty clear of the rowers, no need for them to get all upset. Now if I was driving over the bridge that would be a little different. Still legal (I think, no seaplane expert), but it could be scary to someone driving over the bridge. I mean they are seeing a plane flying pretty much right towards them.

You don't get a particularly good view down off the side of a bridge when driving, I doubt anyone driving even noticed.

Regardless of the view, the rowers should not be concerned. The people the plane was closest to were on the bridge, and they shouldn't even be concerned. However, it would be a little easier to understand if someone that was on the bridge complained, but not the rowers.

The rowers which could see it complained because they were particularly envious that their craft could not leave the water regardless of how mightily they stroked! The cars on the bridge ,not so much.

I am not sure but I thought I actually heard the rowers in the video cheering him on. Or is my hearing going too?? What? Huh? Say what? :D

That's what French and Italians sound like when they curse you. My Latvian stewardess thinks all the Italian guys sound gay.

After further review of the video, it's official, the rowers were, " exclaiming in disbelief ".

:hairraise:

Simpler. It's "I don't do what you do so you should stop it."

Meigs airport was a waste of valuable land for rich people while the boat harbors and golf courses next door - that take up MORE land - are cool.

Flying is dangerous and noisy. Mack got a big ol' Harley motorcycle for his mid-life crisis.

Actually happened: Indoor smoking banned. Company built outdoor shelters for smoking. Village outlawed having doors on the shelters because those creepos should just stop or freeze.

Also laws proposed to stop people from smoking in their own cars and homes.

(And no, I don't smoke and don't like it around me.)

It could have been a tragedy! THAT PLANE WAS IN THE SAME SPACE AS used by SWIMMERS AND ROWERS.

Worser: On the street outside cars and big trucks keep coming through the same crosswalks that CHILDREN USE TO GET TO SCHOOL!

Didn't look as bad as they are saying. People will complain about anything.

The problem is bridge maintenance. Sometimes ropes and cables hang from work being done, and they are hard to see.

One seaplane base in Portland was 100 yards upstream of the Interstate Bridge, at Jantzen Beach. Airplanes regularly flew or high speed taxied under that bridge.

Another common bridge undercrossing was/is just south of Nanaimo. That was/is a regular seaplane highway. Never heard a peep of complaint.

A Nav Canada Ops Inspector will surely get a call from the Oklahoma Wonder Boy because this is surely a huge safety issue because his girl friend was within several hundred miles of the takeoff. There is even video!
