This is for Tom-D, or anyone else in the area!

I used to live in Oak Harbor, but my wife and I moved away in 2006. My Father in law still lives there. He's a retired Master Chief. He has been kicking the idea around of learning to fly for several years (since I got my PPL), and is ready to give it a try. Unfortunately, as some of you may know, the base closed the flight club recently.

Is there another in the area where he could take lessons in a rental plane? He's willing to drive into Burlington/Mount Vernon if that's what it takes.

Does he have any options?

Nothing sounds more dangerous than a flying Master Chief. Probably a retired MMCPO too right? :)

Yeah, probably. He will never talk about what he did. I'm not from a military background so I have no clue.

When I visit the base with him we get a pretty good reaction from the guardhouse, but when I visit with a friend who is a retired captain, the response is slightly more pronounced...

Anybody know anyone who is instructing in Western Washington, north of Seattle?

I have many Starving CFIs on my customer list, have your FIL call me I'm in the directory.

Or stop by the house and we'll get him flying no problem.

Why did the club close? I flew out of there early last decade. I miss the area. Was a decent club once you physically
left the club house.

Your CAPT friend significantly outranks him, but he knows, just like little idiot O-3 me knows that a Master Chief runs the damned Navy. A maintenance Master Chief is either the success or the failure of any squadron. There cannot possibly be a more important person in the chain of command, Skipper and XO included.

Years ago I worked with a retired E-9 (and current GS-12). I learned an incredible amount from him. A great guy and incredibly sharing with his knowledge. RIP, Lloyd.

Safety record sucked, the skipper closed them.

I'll bet that when you talk to any Airedale sailor they will remember every master chief they worked for.
