Was listening to MDW ground this morning. They had a paint crew on the ground at/near 31C.One thing pointed out on another board, there are no hold short markings on Runway 4L at either Runway 31L or 31C. Still doesn't absolve the Flexjet crew, but is a contributing factor.
Using 4L as a taxiway honestly seems like poor procedure, lack of these markings for one. The FAA in Airport Design discourages taxiway crosses near the "high speed" portion of the runway, approximately the center third or half. There isn't a parallel to 4L probably for that reason, so ATC just uses the runway.
Like the DC crash, normalization of deviation. If they had only made Flexjet follow the taxiway system perhaps this could have been avoided. Fortunately this time the SWA crew was on their game and went around. Watching it again it doesn't appear their gear ever touched.
Hopefully, this is what they were doing.
Now…
They could be doing something else. If they are addressing the markings, this could be faster or slower than it would normally be done (so let’s please not weigh in on past, current, or future political administrations).
If they are painting hold shorts, encouraging that a contributing factor is being quickly addressed vs waiting for a preliminary report, etc, etc.
P.S. Try showing the gorilla video to a few men and a few women. You’ll likely see some interesting differences in how men and women observe and process information. Spoiler - In my family, neither of my two sons saw the gorilla. My wife and daughter did. I had seen this video used to point out that very difference in grad school.
