Fouga Magister or L39?

So I'm planning my epic x-country.....coast to coast in a 170. Planning on stopping in Santa Fe on the way (been wanting to do some training at the Jet Warbird Training Center there for a while, but haven't been able to fit it in until now)

So, I'm trying to decide between the Fouga Magister and the L39. I can basically do almost 2 hrs in the Fouga for the cost of 1 hour in the L39. Plus the Fouga counts as multi-time. But.....I'm told the L39 has much better performance.

They have a T-33, but they can't put you in the front seat of the T-33 without previous jet time. Aside from 30 mins hand flying a 767-400 Level D sim, this will be my first bona fide turbine time.

What would you do?

I have no time in either, but we have both at the museum at OLM and I've seen them both fly. The L-39 is faster, but the Magistere is also a jet and given the choice I'd fly it and have 1 extra hour in the log. :D That's all I could base a suggestion on. Have fun!

Hmmm, the Fouga is kinda slow, very noisy, and not challenging to fly in the slightest. It is a fun highly maneuverable plane though and will crank aerobatic maneuvers. I haven't flown the L-39, but it would be my choice.

Are you coming to my coast? I always like to offer out of town guests from POA an in-air tour.

I've always been intrigued by the Fouga. You see them from time to time as personal airplanes. There used to always be one at KCOS when I'd go down there. It was painted in artic camo. Very cool, and I like the V tail.

The L-29 is the same price as the Fouga. What about that as a compromise?

If you need, or think you do, the multi time the answer is obvious. And 2 hours is better than one. But I think there is a reason a Fouga can be purchased for $75,000 on Barnstormers.

The Albatros is not a rocket off the line but a real kick once airborne.
This is a link to some photos and a couple short videos of a quick flight with a great group of guys in California that do a pretty nice job with them:

This was just a flight of two that day to work with an alternate lead. We did the same routine several times then a low level hard G turn that had me greying out....almost.

Hope you share your impressions of whichever you choose!
Have fun :yesnod:

If it's just a ride I'd go with the L-39 but if I were buying one I'd vote for the extra engine of the Fouga.
