My older son starts high school next week, I was desperately in need of a couple of days off, and the weather looked good, so we made last minute plans on Sunday to make the trek down to First Flight.
Monday:
FME-RATTA-FAGED-MQI, about 2h15m. Check thy notams, for MQI has a temporary tower. Got gas, stopped at the on-field mx to chat about a minor issue, and took the courtesy car into town for lunch. Poor Richard's had the best sandwiches ever. Topped off the crown vic. The repair work was done by the time we got back, so we blasted off for the shortest flight ever from MQI to FFA. We hoofed it into town and checked in to Shutters on the Banks. I sat on the beach alone for an hour and did absolutely nothing. That was pretty awesome. We got dinner and ice cream and had the best sleep ever.
Tuesday:
Hotel breakfast (protip: maple and brown sugar instant oatmeal + a portion control cup of peanut butter = awesome). Wandered back to the airport, checked out the AOPA pilot lounge, preflighted, and were on our way, FFA-PVG-FAGED-RATTA-FME. 6500 most of the way home, above the clouds and above the boundary layer; clear and cool and smooth. Picked up a bravo clearance on our way back into the WHINO gate, then back down into the gray dishwater air.
Huge shout out to Jason and Quinn at OBX Airplanes for helping a tailwheel brother out.
