Funny how it does look like an ant hill. Those videos are always facinating.

I took a tour of the ARTCC here in Memphis last year. At the close of their presentation they showed a similar video of the midnight push when all the FDX planes come in simultaneously. A front was moving in from the west causing winds in advance to veer around to the south and pick up considerable strength. The animation shows the line of northbound (downwind) jets going ever farther and farther north before turning base and final, eventually flying well up into Missouri.

The end result of everyone following the leader farther and farther out was that eventually some started breaking out of the pattern and diverting to alternates because of fuel exhaustion. More and more bailed out to Little Rock and Nashville. It was really interesting watching the pattern break down like a pipe bursting.

Interestingly enough, the Wx specialist from Approach took full responsibility. We didn't know the guy showing the video was the FAA Wx guy until he said that. Pretty cool.
