Jet is in two pieces, right next to each other... another VTOL gone bad? Looks like it dropped like a rock and split in two...
If there were any forward velocity I'd expect there to be separation.

Looks more like the center section burned out, not an impact split.

“The pilot ejected, was transported to a local medical facility in stable condition for evaluation and treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.”

Interesting callsign….. Nightmare
Honors their lineage as a night fighter squadron in Korea flying the Corsair and Tigercat. They were VMF-513 then. The Navy and Marines don’t to as good a job with historical lineage as the USAF but they try.

Miramar was renamed Foss field in 99. A worthy name for sure.

Not sure why the field name. When I was there we used the name of the air station (Miramar) and not the name of the field (Mitscher) for all ATC comms. Same as Beaufort. It’s Beaufort Tower and not Merritt Tower for comms. Even Fore flight lists it as “Miramar Tower.”

Agreed. But Foss is one syllable instead of Miramar and comms brevity is good is the only excuse I came up with. NAS Whidbey was Ault Field and was never called that. I can't think of any Navy field that uses the field name (except the now closed NAS Cecil). Some USAF like Randolph, Luke and Edwards do though.

Still like to know what they did with the old tower cab. Would’ve been a perfect addition to the museum at NPA. Maybe even convert it to a simulator so visitors could play tower controller.

I am aware. The question was brought up because of the use of field name in ATC comms. We never did that when I was there.

Someone missed the "buzz?" :dunno:

That’s NAS Fallon Tower. Newer pic below. There were actually two different flybys in the movie from two different locations. Two different pilots as well. You can tell in the movie the change in lighting between the two.

Anyway, Fallon Tower still stands with their new tower at a different location down the ramp. The old Miramar Tower was removed years ago after they got their new tower back in 1998. I was curious where it went. Most likely to the dump.

Me either, and I was stationed there flying for a couple years doing my cat 1 FRS syllabus. The name Foss rings a bell, probably saw it on AFD or approach plates, but I never heard it used on the radio
